Football: Five things we learnt from the Premier League weekend

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Liverpool took another significant step towards a first top-flight title in 29 years by thrashing Arsenal 5-1 to open up a seven-point lead at the top of the Premier League, thanks also to Tottenham's collapse at home to Wolves.
Manchester City are once again Liverpool's closest challengers ahead of a blockbuster clash between the two on Thursday (Dec 27) as the champions recovered from back-to-back defeats to beat Southampton 3-1.
Manchester United's revival since Jose Mourinho's sacking continued with Paul Pogba again scoring twice to beat Bournemouth 4-1, but United remain eight points off the top four after Chelsea beat Crystal Palace 1-0.
Here, AFP Sports looks at five things we learnt from the Premier League's final fixtures of 2018.

Liverpool's title to lose?

The league leaders haven't lost all season and unless City end their invincible campaign so far at the Etihad this week, it is looking increasingly likely that Liverpool's time has come.
The reaction at times of adversity often makes the mark of champions and after falling behind for the first time in the league at Anfield in nearly a year, Liverpool were ahead within five minutes against Arsenal.

Roberto Firmino scored a hat-trick, while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were also on target as the front three that fired Jurgen Klopp's men to the Champions League final last season all scored in the same league game for the first time this campaign.
Should that front three hit top form to compliment a defensive record of eight goals conceded in 20 games, it is hard to see how Liverpool will be stopped.

City's response of champions

The champions weren't at their sparkling best, but got what Pep Guardiola admitted was the most important thing - a win - to restore some confidence before they try to end Liverpool's unbeaten start.
"If you want to be there as far as possible until the end we have to remember what happened last season and this (season) as well - apart from the last few days," insisted Guardiola.
The return of David Silva, who scored City's opener, and Fernandinho to the midfield made a massive difference and City may even have Kevin de Bruyne back too in time for Thursday.

Spurs run out of steam

Despite a run of five straight victories, Tottenham were always seen as outsiders in the title race and any chance they had may have disappeared by Wolves' late show as the visitors scored three times in the final 18 minutes to win 3-1 at Wembley.
Spurs were in total control in the first half but the strains of 29 games in three competitions on a stretched squad in the first five months of the season began to show in a tired performance after the break.
"Today for us it's a clear example that if we are not consistent enough, with not only good quality during the game, and the right energy, it's difficult to compete for big things," said a disappointed Mauricio Pochettino.

Emery's Arsenal stalling

Arsene Wenger was chastised when Arsenal conceded four at Anfield last August at the beginning of his final season in charge at Arsenal. On Saturday, Unai Emery's side had conceded four by half-time.
Despite a 22-game unbeaten run between August and December, Arsenal are now just one point better off after 20 games than they were last season when finishing sixth.
In contrast to their last meeting with Liverpool in a 1-1 draw in November when Emery's impact had Arsenal re-energised and freshly filled with optimism, the Gunners looked mentally and physically soft when met with Liverpool's pace, power and belief.
Chelsea now have a five-point cushion in the race for a top-four finish and defensive reinforcements are clearly needed in January if Arsenal are to compete for a Champions League return.

Near-perfect Pogba

What a difference little more than a week has made to spirits at Manchester United.
Eight days ago life without Jose Mourinho began with a 5-1 thrashing of Cardiff, while both Huddersfield and Bournemouth have now been sent packing from Old Trafford with the sort of routine defeat United fans expect.
Paul Pogba wasn't even on the pitch for the final act of Mourinho's reign as he sat on the bench for the full 90 minutes in defeat to Liverpool, but Solskjaer's promise to build his team around the Frenchman has paid off instantly.
After scoring twice against Huddersfield, Pogba bagged another double on Sunday as well as setting up Romelu Lukaku's fourth goal and hitting the post.
This version of the midfielder is the one United thought they were buying when paying a then world record £89 million to Juventus in 2016.

Football: Huddersfield move closer to relegation, Burnley in trouble

LONDON (AFP) - Huddersfield slipped closer to Premier League relegation as the bottom club blew a two-goal lead in their 4-3 defeat at West Ham, while Burnley are in deep trouble after losing 2-1 against 10-man Leicester on Saturday (March 16).
Jan Siewert's side looked to have kept alive their faint hopes of beating the drop as they raced into a 3-1 lead in east London.
But a second-half collapse culminated in Javier Hernandez's last-gasp winner for West Ham, leaving Huddersfield 16 points from safety with only seven games remaining.
"For me it's hard to describe at the moment. I'm disappointed and to be honest I can't believe it," Siewert said.
"I have thousands of thoughts. I don't want to talk about the best performances. I want to win games."
Mark Noble put West Ham ahead with a 15th-minute penalty after 18-year-old Aaron Rowe, making his first professional start, brought down Manuel Lanzini.
Huddersfield were level just two minutes later when Juninho Bacuna headed in from Aaron Mooy's corner for the Terriers' first away league goal since Boxing Day.
Karlan Grant gave Huddersfield the lead with a close-range finish in the 30th minute and the January signing from Charlton scored again in the 65th minute with a fantastic 20-yard strike.
But Angelo Ogbonna reduced the deficit with 15 minutes left and Hernandez completed West Ham's gritty fightback with an 84th-minute header from Samir Nasri's cross.
Former Manchester United striker Hernandez wasn't finished yet and he struck again in the final seconds with a header from Felipe Anderson's cross.

DYCHE FRUSTRATED

At Turf Moor, Burnley's survival bid was dented as they were rocked by Leicester.
Leicester defender Harry Maguire was sent off in the fourth minute for a trip on Johann Berg Gudmundsson as the Burnley midfielder ran clear on goal.
It was the fastest Premier League red card in four years, but Leicester weren't fazed as James Maddison opened the scoring with a superb 33rd-minute free-kick.

Burnley's teenage forward Dwight McNeil equalised with a fine finish in the 38th minute.
But Leicester snatched the points in the 90th minute when defender Wes Morgan struck after Youri Tielemans' cross deflected into his path.
Burnley are one place and two points above the relegation zone, with third-bottom Cardiff holding a game in hand.
"It can play with you psychologically when someone gets sent off so early. We didn't get to grips with the game in the first half," frustrated Burnley boss Sean Dyche said.
"Our use of the ball wasn't good enough, we didn't create enough chances."
In the day's other game, Matt Ritchie's last-gasp equaliser rescued Newcastle in their 2-2 draw at Bournemouth.
Salomon Rondon blasted Newcastle into the lead with his 10th goal of the season, this one a powerful free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
However, Josh King equalised with 48th-minute penalty awarded for Federico Fernandez's foul on Nathan Ake.
King's second goal arrived in the 81st minute after good work from Dominic Solanke, but Ritchie had the last word with a fierce half-volley.
On Sunday, Liverpool can replace Manchester City on top of the table if they win at Fulham, while Chelsea look to improve their top four prospects at Everton.

Klopp can shuffle pack at the back despite injuries

Klopp can shuffle pack at the back despite injuries

LONDON • While an untimely series of injuries has left Jurgen Klopp short-handed at the back, the Liverpool manager knows in Fabinho, he has a player as comfortable in defence as he is in midfield.
Trent Alexander-Arnold joined a growing casualty list after suffering a knee injury during last weekend's 1-0 win at Brighton, and could be out for up to a month. The decision to loan Nathaniel Clyne to Bournemouth for the season has been questioned, with Joe Gomez and Dejan Lovren still working their way back to fitness.
But, while Joel Matip is expected to be back in the squad for today's Premier League game at home to Crystal Palace since fracturing his collarbone during their Champions League win over Napoli on Dec 11, Klopp can afford to resist throwing him into the fray given Fabinho's "defensive brain".
It has taken the Brazil midfielder, signed in the summer for £39 million (S$68.4 million), time to adapt to English football. He made his league debut only in October, but Klopp never had any doubts the "brilliant player" would become a vital cog as Liverpool chase their first league title in 29 years.
The German said: "To have a good footballer in that position when you have the ball is great. He can play in a lot of positions."
The 25-year-old, who was instrumental alongside Virgil van Dijk in defence as the Reds kept a 13th clean sheet in 22 league games at the Amex Stadium to maintain a four-point cushion over champions Manchester City, also saw his switch to "centre-back coming".
He told the club website: "Some weeks ago, I knew this could be an option because we had some players injured. I had some training sessions playing in that position, which helped me adapt better and pick up aspects like positioning and movements."
Another player who will have a key role in helping the table-toppers maintain the league's best defensive record - only 10 goals conceded - against Roy Hodgson's men is left-back Andy Robertson.
The Scotland captain was rewarded on Thursday with a new contract until 2024, after a string of fine performances to cement his starting position in the team.
Klopp said the 24-year-old, who "screams Liverpool", put pen to paper "in almost record time", and Robertson revealed the decision was a "no-brainer".
He said: "I want to stay. As soon as they put an offer on the table, it was signed as quickly as that."

Stadium switch poised to lift Spurs

Stadium switch poised to lift Spurs

LONDON • Mauricio Pochettino has hailed Tottenham's newly opened stadium as "the best in the world" and that "the facilities would convince people to sign for the club".
Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow's Premier League clash against Liverpool, the Spurs manager cut a delighted figure after months of delays owing to "issues with the critical safety systems".
The club had originally been due to play their first match at their new ground on Sept 15.
He said yesterday: "It is amazing, we can confirm that now. Every space is the best I have seen in my life, you can't compare that with anything. It is going to be fantastic for the future of the club.
"It is going to be a massive boost for our fans and it must be for our players, too. We are still romantic, but not many people are romantic, (though) there are people around who care more about the business than to work in a good place."
While Spurs will play their first game at their refurbished home only on Wednesday in a league meeting with Crystal Palace, Dele Alli believes the permanent switch from Wembley could give his side a fillip as "the change is what we needed at this point of the season".

NEW HOME, NEW HOPE
It's finally come. There were a lot of memories at White Hart Lane.Hopefully, we can make some better ones here.
DELE ALLI, midfielder, on Tottenham's move to their new stadium.

The England midfielder told Sky Sports: "We are all very excited, we've been waiting for this for a long time. It's finally come.
"There were a lot of memories at White Hart Lane. Hopefully, we can make some better ones here. You never know what is going to happen in football, but we definitely feel the club is heading (in the right direction).
"We're getting better as a team and we have to keep doing that. We've got some great young players and an amazing manager.
"We're all enjoying playing together, and we want to try and create history. Hopefully, we can make a positive end (to the term) in this stadium."
But, before Alli and his teammates can aim to christen their new stadium with a victory, they face a daunting task at Anfield, where the table-toppers are unbeaten in the league this season.

Pochettino will also be without England duo Eric Dier and Harry Winks, and Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier.
Admitting the two-week international break had come at an inopportune time as his side were left stewing over the 2-1 defeat by Southampton on March 9, the Argentinian said: "It's a bad thing because the last feeling is not good.
"Three weeks without competing becomes a little bit boring. But that is the situation, we need to accept it and we cannot change that.
"I'm happy that we are going to compete (on) Sunday and we are going to start a very busy period until the end. I am happy when we are competing."
And, according to former Reds defender Phil Thompson, the fact that Spurs are "in touching distance of the new stadium" could help them buck their poor record on Merseyside - their last league win over Liverpool away was in 2011.
He told Sky: "They will want Champions League football next season, so they will be going all out for it. They have the confidence and ability to give Liverpool a game."

Football: Wilson scores wonder volley as Bournemouth beat West Ham

BOURNEMOUTH, England (REUTERS) - Bournemouth's Callum Wilson smashed home a wonderful second-half volley and his strike partner Joshua King added a second to give their side a much-needed 2-0 home win over West Ham United in their Premier League clash on Saturday (Jan 19).
With Bournemouth desperate to secure their first league victory in almost a month, Artur Boruc started in goal ahead of Asmir Begovic while West Ham left unsettled striker Marko Arnautovic, who has been linked with a big-money move to China, out of their squad.
Both sides struggled to hit the target in the first half, but West Ham's Lukasz Fabianski made two superb saves early in the second and moments later striker Andy Carroll, in for Arnautovic, blazed over from close range as the game opened up.
Wilson gave the home side the lead with a thunderous volley in the 54th minute, catching the ball perfectly and leaving Fabianski rooted to the spot as it flew into the top right-hand corner for his 10th league goal of the season.
With West Ham attacking and Bournemouth content to play on the counter, Wilson almost got a second in the 71st minute but this time his first-time shot came off the foot of the far post and rolled to safety.
The visitors continued to leave space at the back as they desperately chased an equaliser, and King was able to slot the ball into an empty net after a superb counter-attack to secure all three points for Bournemouth.
"I think the big thing for us today was that we got the breaks - Carroll didn't take his chance and Callum scored a goal out of nothing really for us at the other end, and then we defended very well to win," Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe said.
West Ham manager Manuel Pellegrini told reporters he was disappointed with the result and that he preferred not to talk about the absent Arnautovic.
"We don't need to talk about a player that was not in the squad. I never complain about players who are not here. We have nine players injured, let's talk about the ones here that we brought to play this game," he told reporters.
"We didn't win, Marko Arnautovic didn't play so we must have other players to step up."
