Sarri slammed over Kepa but says issue settled
LONDON • Former Liverpool manager-turned-pundit Graeme Souness has blasted Maurizio Sarri's decision to recall Kepa Arrizabalaga but, as far as the Chelsea manager is concerned, the Spaniard has "paid the price" for his insubordination.
Kepa returned to Sarri's starting XI after being dropped for the previous game against Tottenham following his infamous refusal to be substituted in the League Cup final defeat by Manchester City.
While the Spain goalkeeper produced a fine display in the Blues' 2-1 Premier League win at Fulham on Sunday, Souness felt the Italian had sent out the wrong message to his squad by reinstating Kepa, insisting he should have "left him out of this game and beyond".
He told Sky Sports: "It was a sad reflection on where we are with the modern player. He's 24, done nothing in the game and feels he can challenge the manager like that."
However, Sarri insisted that Kepa had justified his selection by helping the team move to 56 points and within two of fourth spot in the race for Champions League football and the "situation was closed".
He told Sky: "We were trying to involve Tottenham in the (top-four) fight and now they are involved. Better two teams for four places than three for one place. He played very well, it was a normal decision (to bring him back). There wasn't another way, but Kepa is a man. He understood and reacted really very well. He made a mistake, but now that is enough."
Kepa played his part at Craven Cottage, keeping out efforts from Aleksandar Mitrovic, Tom Cairney and Joe Bryan as his side recorded a second straight league win courtesy of goals from Gonzalo Higuain and Jorginho.
Sarri was especially delighted for the latter, who has borne the brunt of criticism from Chelsea fans for being an underwhelming presence in midfield and having not previously found the net from open play.
He added: "My opinion about Jorginho is the same. He is a great player, one of the most important in Europe in that position.
"He is not at his top level physically, but could have scored three times today. In a couple of weeks, he will be at his top."

Football: Man City experience key in Premier League title race

Football: Man City experience key in Premier League title race

LONDON (AFP) - John Stones says the experience in the Manchester City dressing room will be vital as they aim to finish ahead of Liverpool in the thrilling race for the Premier League title.
City will retain the Premier League crown if they win their final two games against Leicester at home and Brighton away, but with Liverpool just a point behind, there is no room for error.
It is a totally different scenario from last season, when City romped to the title with five games to spare and went on to finish a record 19 points clear of nearest challengers Manchester United.
"Last season the league was done by now," said defender Stones. "It's a strange situation because some of us haven't been in this situation before.
"I think Vinny (Vincent Kompany) said that these are the times when it brings the best out of you as a player, but him as a player, David (Silva), Sergio (Aguero) and a few of the others have been in this situation before. They know what the feeling is, how to get the best out of it.
"We've got to be guided by those and try to take everything in. It makes everything exciting, keeps everyone on our toes."
The England player said the tightness of the race was "making us hungrier to keep winning, keep the pressure on and keep fighting until we can't any more. It's exciting to be part of it".
Stones feels winning this year's title would be more special than last campaign's success because it would make City the first team to win two in succession for a decade.
The 24-year-old said: "It'll be special because it will be back to back, not because we've been pushed by Liverpool.
"I think it's better for the football fans in general that it's gone so late in the season and nobody has won it yet.
City have won their past 12 Premier League games and Stones realises there is still no room to ease up.
He said: "Nobody in our dressing room will take these last games lightly and say these are easy wins.
"Never underestimate any team that's lower in the league than you are, that's when you start to become complacent and slip up yourselves.
"I think as players we go in and attack the games as difficult, respect our opponents and try to play our game."

Football: Last-gasp Mitrovic earns Fulham 1-0 win over Huddersfield

LONDON (REUTERS) - Fulham boosted their Premier League survival hopes as Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a stoppage-time winner to give them a dramatic 1-0 victory over bottom team Huddersfield Town at Craven Cottage on Saturday (Dec 29).
The result lifted Claudio Ranieri's Fulham side one place to 18th on 14 points from 20 games, two more than Burnley who host West Ham United on Sunday. Huddersfield remain stuck on 10 points after suffering their seventh successive defeat.
Having had a bullet of a header saved by Jonas Lossl, who also kept out an Aboubakar Kamara penalty, Mitrovic delighted the home fans after taking a Ryan Sessegnon pass in his stride and firing it past the visiting keeper.
The Serbia striker was emotional and also in a forgiving mood after French forward Kamara, who won the penalty, snatched the ball away from Tom Cairney and Mitrovic only to direct a tame spot-kick at Lossl.
"Last time I said I am so unhappy I want to cry, today I want to say I am so happy I want to cry," said Mitrovic.
"For the penalty, we had a small argument and I think it is my job for penalties. He (Kamara) did not think like this but I respect that. I have done the same in the past. I don't have a problem with this, he missed and that is part of football."
Ranieri, who breathed a huge sigh of relief after seeing the Cottagers chalk up only their second league win in the last 17 games, was less forgiving about Kamara's disobedience.
"I said to Aboubakar Kamara to leave the ball to Aleksandar Mitrovic, he is the man who shoots the penalties," he said.
Huddersfield had the upper hand in the first half but Fulham always looked more likely to score, although they only had a pair of harmless Mitrovic headers to show for their efforts.
Lossl looked like the game's hero after denying Mitrovic and Kamara in the second half, the latter being booed by the home fans every time he touched the ball in the closing stages.
But just when it seemed Kamara would be left to rue his ill-judged penalty miss, Mitrovic spared his blushes with a superb finish after Fulham nearly fell behind in a climactic finale.
Huddersfield had launched a promising raid and, after Fulham cleared the danger, the home side engineered a quick breakaway move with Sessegnon feeding Mitrovic to rifle the ball home with a first-time shot from just inside the penalty area.
"It is a big three points, we kept another clean sheet and that is a big improvement for us," added Mitrovic. "We need to carry on winning games and taking points."

Football: Neymar leaving foot injury up to God

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AFP) - Brazilian football star Neymar said on his Instagram feed on Thursday (Jan 24) that he was leaving everything in God's hands after his club Paris Saint-Germain announced he had suffered fresh injury to his right foot.
"Your will be done, God," the forward wrote, next to a photo of one of his tattoos on which it is written on his thigh: "1% luck, 99% faith."
Neymar is a devout evangelical Christian.
His club said the injury sustained on Wednesday in a French Cup match against Strasbourg was to his fifth metatarsal, which was already fractured last season.
The extent of the problem this time was not yet known.
Neymar added no details on his social media post.
Tests in the coming days will reveal how serious it is.

But the recurrence comes three weeks before PSG play Manchester United in the Champions League.
It is also a worry for the Selecao as Brazil host the Copa America between June 14 and July 7.

Players confront coach after James-less Lakers' loss
OAKLAND • LeBron James' absence from the Los Angeles Lakers' 115-101 National Basketball Association (NBA) loss to the Golden State Warriors due to "load management" had been the main talking point on Saturday night.
That is until word got out that there had been a bust-up in the Lakers' locker room, with several veteran players, including Michael Beasley and JaVale McGee, getting into a heated exchange with coach Luke Walton.
According to several tweets from The Athletic's Shams Charania, the spat was "emotionally charged" and only just "stopped short of turning physical" .
ESPN corroborated his account, claiming that Beasley and McGee "took exception" to Walton's criticism that the Lakers played like individuals and handled the ball poorly during the defeat.
The pair then reportedly brought up his penchant for rotating as the reason why the team have slipped out of play-off contention, dropping to 10th in the West - two games behind the eighth-placed Los Angeles Clippers with a 27-26 record.
Although a source later told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne that "it never got close to getting out of control", Lance Stephenson, who had 10 points, was unhappy he had been named as one of those involved in the feud.
Post-game, the guard posted a video on his Instagram account, which was captioned: "I'm in a very happy place, nothing but positive. If u (sic) going to write a story, get the real facts please".
Walton's anger at his players was, however, justified as the James-less Lakers had led by as many as 10 points in the third quarter and were still up 89-88 with 11 minutes remaining.
But the two-time defending NBA champions never looked back after Andre Iguodala, who finished with 17 points on seven-for-nine shooting, ignited a fourth-quarter runaway with successive three-pointers. They were paced by a 28-point showing from Klay Thompson.
Brandon Ingram had a team-high 20 points for the Lakers, who fell to 6-12 without James in their line-up.
While Walton did not directly comment on the post-game scenes that transpired, he did shed some light on James' condition, insisting that he would play in tomorrow's game at the Indiana Pacers.
He told ESPN: "Right now, it's more just him being sore after five weeks of not playing basketball."
The 15-time All-Star had only returned last Thursday against the Clippers following a 17-game spell on the sidelines.
