Football: Chelsea boss Sarri, under fire after limp loss to Manchester United, doesn't fear the sack

LONDON (AFP) - Maurizio Sarri insists he isn't worried about being sacked as Chelsea manager despite his troubled side's lacklustre FA Cup surrender against Manchester United.
The Italian faces a fight to save his job after FA Cup holders Chelsea crashed to a 2-0 fifth-round defeat at Stamford Bridge on Monday (Feb 18).
Ander Herrera headed United into the lead from Paul Pogba's cross in the 31st minute.
France star Pogba doubled United's advantage on the stroke of half-time when he met Marcus Rashford's cross with a diving header.
Sarri endured chants of "You don't know what you're doing" and "You're getting sacked in the morning" as furious Chelsea fans showed their frustration at the club's fifth defeat in their last 10 games.
Chelsea's stars, publicly criticised by their manager on several occasions this term, hardly looked to be battling to keep the Italian as they failed to muster a shot on target after the 11th minute.
Sarri's fragile relationship with his players, combined with the mutinous atmosphere among supporters, increased the feeling that the former Napoli boss might not survive until the end of his first season with Chelsea.
Demanding Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has acted quickly in the past when managers have been perceived to have lost the support of the squad.
But Sarri is adamant he isn't concerned about his perilous position and he claimed he is solely focused on salvaging his club's turbulent season.
Asked if he was worried Abramovich might be ready to wield the axe, Sarri said: "It's not my problem.

"I was only worried about my position when I was in League 2 in Italy, not now.
"I am worried about the results, not about the fans. Of course I can understand the situation.
"I can understand our fans, because the result wasn't really good. We are out of the FA Cup."
Chelsea supporters called for their club's former legend Frank Lampard, now in charge at Derby, to be hired and directed foul-mouthed abuse at Sarri, who suffered chants of "F*** Sarri-ball" in a scathing reference to his failing tactics.
"Not really very well, but sometimes yes. For everything there is the first time," he said when quizzed on whether he had heard the taunts from his own fans.
Sarri believes his situation will be improved significantly if Chelsea can string together a winning run, starting with the second leg of their Europa League last-32 tie against Malmo on Thursday and the League Cup final against Manchester City on Sunday.
"It's really very easy. If we are able to win three or four matches in a row, it will be easy. Of course it's difficult to win five matches in a row," he said with a curious smirk that suggested he didn't really believe his own outward optimism.
"We need of course more aggression, more determination in the situation inside our box and inside the opposing box.
"My job is to work with my players to try and improve in a few days because we conceded the second goal without determination or aggression.
"The difference was there. We played 78 balls in the opposing box and United only 16 balls our box. We are supposed to win."

Ikhsan gets off mark in Norway

His team were crying out for a saviour in Oslo, Norway, on Sunday and Ikhsan Fandi delivered.
With one minute left and the game against Skeid tied at 2-2, five Raufoss IL players surged into the opponents' penalty box when Mikkel Maigaard whipped in a hopeful cross from the right.
Ikhsan was the first to react to meet the cross, improvising with an overhead kick to send the ball into the bottom corner for a dramatic winner and his first competitive goal for Raufoss.
The 20-year-old had replaced Ryan Doghman in the 75th minute when his team were 2-1 down, and made his cameo count.
He told The Straits Times: "I never expected my first competitive goal to come from a bicycle kick. It feels even more amazing when it's the match-winner. I will keep working hard to earn more playing time and try to score more goals."
The 3-2 away win extended Raufoss' unbeaten league run to four games, and propelled the second-tier Norwegian side to fourth place on 13 points after seven games.
They trail Aalesund (16 points), Sandefjord (15) and Start (on goal difference) in the 16-team 1. Division. The top two teams earn automatic promotion while third to sixth enter the play-offs for the last slot.
Raufoss coach Christian Johnsen said: "It was about time, regardless of the result, to let him play. Today, he was really good when he came on. He has speed and physicality, and he is also a nice and humble lad who works hard, so we know he has great potential.
"However, in football, it is all about being in shape, and he's starting to get there now."
While Ikhsan had scored for Raufoss in pre-season friendlies, his acrobatic winner was his first goal in a competitive fixture.
It is the first time in 30 years a Singaporean has scored a senior goal for a professional European football club since V. Sundram Moorthy netted the last of his three goals for Swiss side FC Basel in 1989.
Ikhsan's father, Fandi Ahmad, was the only other Singaporean to accomplish the feat with 11 league goals for Dutch team Groningen from 1983 to 1985.
Remarkably, Ikhsan's goal comes after just 92 minutes of league action. Even though he has played in the last six league matches, they were all substitute appearances.
Fandi told ST: "I'm happy for him. He has been wanting to show what he can do, and he injected life into his team when they were down.
"I told him the coach has faith in him, and that's why he has been getting playing time. He just needs to be confident."
Ikhsan's older brother Irfan, 21, is also flourishing with Thai League 2 side BG Pathum United.
With 31 points from 12 games, Pathum are top of the table and on track for a swift return to the top tier.
And the Singapore international defender has played his part with six clean sheets, three goals and two Man-of-the-Match awards.
Fandi said: "I hope more of our footballers venture overseas and improve from playing in a strong league because that can only be good for the national team."

Tough summer for EPL chasing pack

Tough summer for EPL chasing pack
LONDON • Liverpool's attempt to dethrone Manchester City as Premier League champions ended in glorious failure on Sunday, but at least Jurgen Klopp's team proved it was possible to take the title race to the wire.
For Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United - the quartet who ended up in an undistinguished tussle for third and fourth spots in the league - a summer of navel-gazing awaits.
In running away with the title in record-breaking fashion last term, with 100 points and 106 goals, City raised the bar into the stratosphere. And Liverpool have since scaled new heights this time, finishing a point behind on 97 points for the third-highest tally in league history.
For the rest of the "Big Six" though, it has been a story of stagnation or regression, for a variety of reasons, and it is hard to see the duopoly being broken soon.
Mauricio Sarri's debut campaign with Chelsea has been a rocky one at times. His "Sarri-ball" tactics have not suited the likes of N'Golo Kante and the team have relied too heavily on Eden Hazard, who looks poised to leave with just one year left on his deal.
The Belgium forward also cryptically revealed on Sunday that he had already "made his decision", with the announcement set for after the May 29 Europa League final against Arsenal.
While fourth-placed Spurs have reached the Champions League final with Liverpool on June 1, they face a critical summer ahead.
There are signs manager Mauricio Pochettino has grown weary of fighting for the league title without the tools that City boss Pep Guardiola and Klopp have at their disposal.
Spurs are the only club in league history not to sign any players in the past two transfer windows.
London rivals Arsenal also finished outside the top four for the third straight season and, while they could yet get into the Champions League by lifting the Europa League, Unai Emery has not rid them of the frailties that marked the later Arsene Wenger years.
They lost eight times away and a defence propped up by Laurent Koscielny looks in need of major surgery after conceding 51 goals.
However, while all three clubs have plenty of work to do in the close season, the biggest challenge will be faced by United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
When Jose Mourinho insisted leading United to second the previous season was one of his best achievements, many mocked the Portuguese, who was sacked in December. That claim now looks valid, with the sixth-placed Red Devils playing like a team of disconnected individuals.
Although fans have demanded an immediate improvement, Solskjaer has urged a dose of reality, admitting a title challenge was "not realistic because the two teams now at the top of the table are far ahead of the chasing pack".
Pochettino, Sarri and Emery may well share that sentiment.

Football: Wolves' unhappy new year sees 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace

WOLVERHAMPTON, England (REUTERS)- Wolverhampton Wanderers saw their impressive Premier League campaign run into the buffers as two goals in the dying minutes enabled Crystal Palace to take all three points with a 2-0 win at Molineux on Wednesday (Jan 2).
Looking out of sorts at the start of the year, Nuno Espirito Santo's Wolves had only needed a draw to become the the first promoted team to garner 30 points after 21 matches in a top flight season since Birmingham City in 2009-10.
Instead, their hopes of rising as high as seventh were spoiled as Palace deservedly took the spoils with Ghanaian international Jordan Ayew firing home his first goal for the club in the 83rd minute.
Luka Milivojevic then converted from the penalty spot, five minutes into added time, after Ryan Bennett had brought down Wilfried Zaha.
It gave Palace consecutive away wins in the same Premier League season for the first time in two years and Roy Hodgson's team were well worth the points.
They dominated the first half, with only their profligate finishing letting them down - with Andros Townsend's dismal ballooned right-footed shot and James Tomkins' missed header proving the most glaring examples.
Wolves, as befits their reputation this term as second-half revivalists, looked much sharper on the resumption, creating more chances in the opening four minutes after the break than in the entire first-half.

Football: Watford's Andre Gray strikes late winner to spoil Brendan Rodgers' Leicester debut against former side

(REUTERS) - Watford's Andre Gray scored a stoppage-time winner as Leicester began life under new boss Brendan Rodgers in underwhelming fashion, suffering a 2-1 defeat at his former club in the English Premier League on Sunday (March 3).
Watford clinched victory in the second minute of added time as Troy Deeney latched on to a poor goal kick by Leicester custodian Kasper Schmeichel and fed substitute Gray, who held his nerve to score.
Watford had taken the lead through Deeney in the fifth minute, as the striker got his body across Wes Morgan and rose well to head home Gerard Deulofeu's whipped ball from a free kick for his first goal in 10 matches at Vicarage Road.
Leicester responded after the break, as Jamie Vardy ran onto a fine through ball from midfielder Youri Tielemens and dinked his finish over Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster for his 10th league goal of the season.
Despite conceding early, Leicester looked lively as the first half wore on but were unable to convert their good build-up play into clear chances, as Watford comfortably maintained their defensive discipline.
Watford began the second half on the front foot as Deulofeu combined well with Roberto Pereyra to tee up Abdoulaye Doucoure, whose curling shot from distance was swatted away by Schmeichel.
Vardy, who endured a heavy collision with Foster earlier in the match, was substituted minutes after scoring as he appeared to suffer a delayed reaction to the knock.
Watford, eighth on 43 points, are at champions Manchester City next, while 11th-placed Leicester (35) host second-bottom Fulham.

Andre Gray came off the bench to earn Watford a late 2-1 Premier League win at home to Leicester City in Brendan Rodgers' first game in charge of the Foxes. Jamie Vardy's equaliser seemed to have earned Rodgers' men a draw at Vicarage Road on Sunday after the striker cancelled out an early header by Troy Deeney 15 minutes from time.

Football: Hazard late show rescues Chelsea in Wolves draw

LONDON (AFP) - Eden Hazard came to Maurizio Sarri's rescue as the Chelsea star's superb late strike earned a 1-1 draw against Wolves on Sunday (March 10).
Sarri's side were seconds away from another damaging defeat after Raul Jimenez put Wolves ahead at Stamford Bridge.
Hazard spared the under-fire Sarri's blushes with his thunderous stoppage-time equaliser, but it was still a frustrating day for the Blues boss.
Sarri's side had won three times in 10 days to temporarily silence reports that the Italian was facing the sack.
But Chelsea's latest misfiring effort raised the possibility that Sarri is back on borrowed time in west London.
With fourth-placed Manchester United playing fifth-placed Arsenal later on Sunday, Chelsea, languishing in sixth, will be further adrift of the top four after another tense afternoon for Sarri.
It has been a nightmare debut season for former Napoli boss Sarri, who had to endure a League Cup final defeat against Manchester City in which Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to be substituted.
Under Sarri's watch, Chelsea have also suffered humiliating thrashings at City and Bournemouth, while supporters chanted for his sacking after the FA Cup exit against Manchester United.
Beating Tottenham and Fulham in the league and then easing past Dynamo Kiev in the Europa League last 16 first leg on Thursday had given Sarri some breathing space.
But Wolves have proved a thorn in his side this season and, after beating the Blues 2-1 at Molineux in December, they left the Italian looking over his shoulder anxiously again.
Chelsea are in action at Kiev on Thursday before a league trip to Everton next Sunday.
The international break looms after that and Sarri could do with victories in those games to ensure Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich doesn't wield the axe.

CHELSEA FLAWS

With Chelsea's legendary striker Didier Drogba watching from the stands, it didn't take long for Gonzalo Higuain - Sarri's handpicked targetman - to demonstrate the flaws in the current crop.
After a rapid exchange of passes with Pedro, Higuain could only muster a shot that was blocked by Romain Saiss.
Higuain, on loan from AC Milan, had another sight of goal from N'Golo Kante's pass, but this time his low strike was pushed away by Rui Patricio.
Despite all their possession, Chelsea lacked a cutting edge in a creatively uninspired display that was a return to the problems they have endured for much of the season.
A monotonous procession of slow, sideways passes brought no reward against Wolves' massed defence, triggering jeers from frustrated Chelsea fans at half-time.
After an anonymous first half, Hazard finally showed signs of life with a surge that ended with the Belgian being hauled down by Matt Doherty on the edge of the area.
But David Luiz's effort from the resulting free-kick bounced tamely off the Wolves wall.
Having soaked up Chelsea's futile attempts to break them down, Wolves sprang out to snatch the lead with a perfectly executed counter in the 56th minute.
Breaking from their own area, Wolves exploited the out of position Chelsea defence as Jimenez flicked a pass to Diogo Jota.
Jota ran wide before guiding the ball back into Jimenez, who prodded home via a deflection off Cesar Azpilicueta for his 14th goal this season.
Higuain tried to lead the Chelsea response with a shot on the turn, but Patrico saved before Pedro's long-range effort was pushed over by the keeper.
Higuain couldn't stretch far enough to score when Hazard's corner was deflected into his path.
Willian's low strike was repelled by Patricio as Chelsea pushed for the equaliser.
With just moments left, Hazard at last ended Wolves' stubborn resistance with a fierce long-range drive that flashed past Patricio for his first goal in seven games.

Football: Solskjaer ref rage as Arsenal dent United's top four bid

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed referee Jonathan Moss should be "disappointed" with his decision to give Arsenal a controversial penalty in their 2-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday (March 10).
Solskjaer was furious that Moss ruled Fred's challenge on Alexandre Lacazette was worthy of a spot-kick in the 69th minute.
The United midfielder made only the slightest contact with Lacazette as he lent into the France striker, who immediately tumbled to the turf.
With United already trailing to Granit Xhaka's opener, the decision was a hammer blow as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang slotted home the penalty to effectively seal the three points.
"The referee will be disappointed when he sees it as I don't think it is a penalty," United interim manger Solskjaer complained.
However, Solskjaer refused to condemn United keeper David de Gea after he was left flat-footed by Xhaka's swerving long-range effort.
"David (de Gea) is disappointed every time he concedes a goal. The ball moves so strange and it looks like it goes to David's left and it changed direction," he said.

It was United's first Premier League defeat since Dec 16 at Liverpool in Jose Mourinho's last game in charge.
For Solskjaer, whose side enjoyed a stunning Champions League win at Paris Saint Germain in midweek, this was his first loss in 16 domestic matches since being appointed, ending a club-record run of nine successive away wins.
Solskjaer admitted United's tame opening may have been in part caused by fatigue after their European heroics.
"In the first 15, 20 minutes we were too slow and never put them under pressure," he said.
"Maybe a backlash from Wednesday night, but we created chances and when they get the first goal it becomes a different game.
"We created so many more chances today than when we beat them in the FA Cup. Sometimes it happens, we hit the woodwork twice.
"It has been fantastic so far but today is the lowest we have been because we lost and missed the chance to put pressure on Spurs."
Arsenal move above United into fourth place as the race to qualify for next season's Champions League gathers pace.
The Gunners are two points ahead of United and only one point behind third placed Tottenham, with sixth placed Chelsea three points adrift of the top four with a game in hand.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery was delighted with a statement result that showed his team can hold their own against the league's elite.
"They (United) were in a good moment after one result against PSG but we had a big performance and we are in a good moment in the Premier League," he said.
"To take three points and get a good position for our target is very good and I'm happy for the players.
"Being competitive like today for 90 minutes can give us a stronger mentality."

Football: Late Iraqi free-kick breaks Vietnamese hearts at Asian Cup

ABU DHABI (AFP) - Ali Adnan swept home a brilliant, last-minute free-kick as former champions Iraq twice hit back to beat Vietnam 3-2 in the Asian Cup on Tuesday (Jan 8).
It was a heart-breaking way for Vietnam to lose in Abu Dhabi, but no more than Iraq deserved for going for the jugular after Humam Tareq had hauled them level on the hour mark.
"The first half was horrible," said Iraq coach Srecko Katanec.
"We showed nothing that we did in training - no power, no personality at all. Maybe it was first-game emotions, the players felt the pressure a little bit."
"I knew it would be a tough game," added the Slovenian.
"But the most important thing was the three points."
Vietnam's Golden Dragons took a shock lead after 24 minutes in the Group D clash in Abu Dhabi, defender Ali Faez panicking under pressure from Nguyen Cong Phuong and clumsily backheeling the ball past goalkeeper Jalal Hassan Hachim.
Iraq, who defied the odds to win an emotional Asian Cup title in 2007, levelled 10 minutes later through striker Mohanad Ali, who profited from a defensive error to rifle home from the edge of the box.
Cong Phuong restored Vietnam's lead three minutes before the break, stabbing in from close range after Nguyen Trong Huang's shot had been parried by Hachim.
But Tareq lashed home a second equaliser following more horrific defending from the Vietnamese, who by that point looked to be running out of steam.

LAZY FOUL

A lazy foul on the edge of the penalty area subsequently presented Adnan with the chance to take all three points and he did not disappoint, curling a left-foot shot into the top corner, prompting several Vietnamese players to slump to the turf in despair.
Iraq join Iran on three points after their bitter rivals thrashed Yemen 5-0 on Monday.
Iraq's circumstances have scarcely improved since thir fairytale success 12 years ago, with security concerns impacting their preparations for tournaments.
But the Lions of Mesopotamia will hope to at least match their run to the Asian Cup semi-finals in Australia four years ago, despite losing several of their top players to retirement.
"If we want to go deep into the tournament we will have to improve," shrugged Katanec.
"But I have a clearer picture now of our overall condition and we will grow into the tournament."
Vietnam coach Park Hang-seo, who steered his side to the southeast Asian title last December, insisted he had no regrets.
"I'm proud of my players," said the South Korean.
"At the end they were exhausted and lost a bit of concentration but we were a little unlucky too."
"We were targeting a point from this game because we play Iran next and obviously they're title favourites," he added.
"It will be very tough from here but we will go again."
