Football: Jubilant Liverpool fans celebrate Champions League win in Madrid

MADRID (AFP) - Thousands of euphoric Liverpool fans, chanting "champions" and clad in their team's red colours, took to the streets of Madrid to celebrate victory in their Champions League final against Tottenham.
Liverpool supporters erupted in delight at Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano stadium after Saturday's 2-0 Champions League victory over Spurs, which gave the team their sixth European Cup.
"Unbelievable, I can't believe we did it again. What a club. What a fan base. What a team. That's what we are all about," said 32-year-old Craig Williams, who came to Madrid from Liverpool for the match.
"We have come back from last year's disappointments...we come to Madrid this year, and we won it. Yes! Come on!".
A year ago, Liverpool lost the Champions League final 3-1 to Real Madrid in Kiev after Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah was forced to go off injured and in tears.
This time around, Salah gave Liverpool the perfect start to the match by converting a penalty to open the scoring in the second minute.
"It's incredible. In one minute, two minutes and there is a penalty, and it changes the entire game," said Diego Martinez, a 41-year-old lawyer and Tottenham fan who came to Madrid for the match from Mexico City.
"This penalty changes the game, and the tactics maybe for the team," he added outside the stadium as jubilant Liverpool supporters celebrated around him.
Some fans held up six figures or chanted "Six times! Six times! Six times!" as they left the stadium.
Others raised red and white team scarves over their heads or chanted "Champions!" as they made their way from the stadium to nearby metro stations.
Mohamed Elneanaey, a 28-year-old who came from Egypt for the match and bears a striking resemblance to Liverpool's Salah, was mobbed by fans outside of the stadium who wanted to pose for selfies with him.
"We are celebrating now. It's big. It's gonna be amazing. We are celebrating here with guys and, then we will go to the streets to celebrate," he said as people around him jokingly called out "Salah! Salah".
Paul Jordan, a 33-year-old shop manager, who flew to the Spanish capital from Liverpool via Prague to be at the match because he could not get a direct flight, said he planned to celebrate the win with his friends "until Monday here in Madrid".
"This is an incredible feeling," he added.
The authorities estimate around 32,000 ticket-holding fans from both teams attended the match at the 68,000-capacity Wanda Metropolitano stadium.
Hundreds of extra flights to the Spanish capital were added and the Madrid hotel association estimates that a total of 70,000 English fans will spend the weekend in the city because of the match.

BRUSSELS • Belgium coach Roberto Martinez has defended Thibaut Courtois following his error on Thursday, which led to an equaliser during the 3-1 win over Russia in their Euro 2020 Group I qualifier at Brussels' King Baudouin Stadium.
Captain Eden Hazard scored twice for Belgium to spare the blushes of his goalkeeper, who gifted Russia's Denis Cheryshev a soft goal when he failed to clear the ball in time.

Youri Tielemans opened the scoring with his first international goal before Hazard netted his brace to clinch the three points for Belgium.
Martinez's men led as early as the 15th minute when Timothy Castagne's pass fed Tielemans on the edge of the box and, as Russia's defensive line opened up, the Leicester midfielder fired a low shot past goalkeeper Guilherme Marinato.
But their lead lasted barely a minute before Courtois made his error.
The Real Madrid custodian dallied in possession following a back-pass and, when pressed into action, he gave the ball straight to Cheryshev on the edge of the box and the winger, who scored four goals at last year's World Cup, finished into an empty net.
He was, however, unfazed and insisted after the match that such instances do not happen often for him.
"I don't think I've made many mistakes in my career, so if you make one, you're obviously not happy," said the 26-year-old .
"I am satisfied with the victory and also with the game I played after my foul. I remained calm, I am happy with that. There is no problem."
Striker Michy Batshuayi was asked by Martinez to lead the line in the absence of the injured Romelu Lukaku, while the Hazard brothers, Eden and Thorgan, played together for only the third time in a national team shirt.
"I enjoyed myself tonight. I take a lot of pleasure from this victory, in which I scored two goals," said skipper Hazard.
"After our last game against Switzerland (a 5-2 Nations League defeat), we had to respond in front of our own fans."

LONDON (AFP) - Harry Kane's absence will inevitably affect Tottenham's performances in the coming weeks, manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted on Friday (Jan 18), but the Argentine is positive they can cope without the England captain.
Kane is not scheduled to return to training until early March after suffering ankle ligament damage towards the end of a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last weekend.
However, the World Cup Golden Boot winner has a track record of returning ahead of schedule from injuries and Pochettino hinted that could be the case once more.
Spurs face huge games against Chelsea on February 27 and Arsenal on March 2 in the Premier League and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on March 5.
"Harry is a very positive person, the moment he got injured he started thinking about recovering as soon as possible," said Pochettino on Friday.
"When he is one of the best strikers in Europe it is going to affect performances.
"We are positive, we can cope and we have players who can cover his position. It won't affect our approach to the games."
Kane's injury is compounded by the absence of Son Heung-min, representing South Korea at the Asian Cup potentially for the rest of the month.
Yet Pochettino reiterated that the club are unlikely to dip into the transfer market for a short-term fix up front.
"It is not going to change our mind. We are open to adding to our squad but that is not going to put pressure on us to sign," he added.
"The market is very difficult. If we find the player that is going to help us and add quality we are more than open to make that happen. At the minute there is no player."
Fernando Llorente looks set to start for the first time in the Premier League this season at Fulham on Sunday, with Lucas Moura still out with a knee problem.

SINGAPORE - An employee of Singapore Premier League club Hougang United has been charged over the loss of more than $250,000 from their clubhouse operations.
While working as an admin assistant, Malaysian Tean Tai Tee allegedly misappropriated $278,200.
The 24-year-old woman was arrested and charged in court on Dec 16, 2018, with one count of criminal breach of trust by a clerk or servant. She is said to have committed the offence between Nov 29 and Dec 11. 
Tean's bail was set at $100,000 and she is due back in court on March 12. If convicted, she can be jailed for up to 15 years, and fined. 
Hougang confirmed with The Straits Times that the police report was made on the day of the incident.
An FAS spokesman said: "The Football Association of Singapore is aware of this matter, and had raised various inquiries with the club.
"A police report had been made, and the police have also arrested a club staff in connection with this matter. As the matter is currently under police investigation, we will not be able to comment further."
Currently, six of nine Singapore Premier League clubs - Albirex Niigata, Balestier Khalsa, Geylang International, Home United, Hougang and Warriors FC - run jackpot operations at their respective clubhouses.
Depending on the size of their clubhouse operations, they typically hold a few hundred thousand dollars in cash to pay out to winners.
In recent years, clubs with jackpot machines have faced a government crackdown on jackpot machine operators.

 
 
 
According to a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in 2017, seven clubs that did not meet the criteria to operate fruit machines were given six-month interim permits to wind down their jackpot operations by the end of April 2018.
These include former S-League (now rebranded Singapore Premier League or SPL) clubs Gombak United and Tanjong Pagar United.
SPL clubs have had to abide by new rules that include shorter opening hours and stricter membership regulation.
From December 2018, they also had to remove some machines from their clubhouses, as part of the MHA's move to further reduce the number of such machines in the country.
The first reduction took place in November 2018 and clubs can have a maximum of 15 machines by November 2019.

LONDON (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks set to replace Jose Mourinho as Manchester United's interim manager after the Premier League club appeared to accidentally announce the appointment on their website.
Mourinho was axed on Tuesday (Dec 18) after just 2½ years in charge at Old Trafford, and the troubled Premier League club are reportedly ready to bring back one of their old heroes to take his place on a temporary basis.
Solskjaer, currently in charge of Norway's Molde, was widely reported to be United's leading candidate for the interim role for the rest of the season while they search for a permanent appointment in the close season.
There has been no official announcement from the club.
However, a video appeared on United's official website celebrating Solskjaer and seeming to confirm his appointment.
A video of him scoring the winner for United in their 1999 Champions League final triumph against Bayern Munich was accompanied with the headline "The most famous night of Ole's career".
Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg also appeared to confirm Solskjaer's appointment, writing on Twitter: "Great day for Norwegian football. Good luck keeping control of the Red Devils."

 
 
 
Solskjaer, nicknamed the baby-faced assassin, scored 128 goals in 367 appearances for United during 10 seasons playing under the club's legendary boss Alex Ferguson, who signed him from Molde in 1996.
After retiring, the Norwegian was appointed as United's reserve team boss before joining Molde as manager in 2010.
Solskjaer had an ill-fated spell in charge of Cardiff in 2014, winning just nine of his 30 games as they were relegated from the Premier League, before being dismissed and returning to Molde in 2015.
Molde's season ended last month and does not resume until March 31, with Solskjaer unlikely to refuse the chance to manage a prestigious club like United.
Ironically, his first match in charge of the Red Devils could be against Cardiff on Saturday if the mooted deal is completed in time.
United are in sixth place in the Premier League after their worst start for 28 years.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane are among the bookmakers' favourites to take the United job at the end of the season.
