Football: Rashford's last-gasp penalty knocks stunned PSG out of Champions League

PARIS (REUTERS) -Marcus Rashford scored a last-gap penalty awarded after a Video Assistant Referee intervention as Manchester United stunned Paris St Germain 3-1 away to reach the Champions League quarter-finals on away goals on Wednesday (March 6).
Never in 106 attempts in Europe's premium club competition had a team progressed in a knockout tie after a 2-0 home defeat but Rashford's stoppage-time penalty sent Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side through in the most dramatic fashion.
The visitors, severely depleted by injuries, went ahead twice in the first half through Romelu Lukaku but Juan Bernat equalised for the French champions in between.
PSG were advancing to the last eight 3-2 on aggregate before referee Damir Skomina awarded United a penalty for a Presnel Kimpembe handball after a lengthy delay for the VAR review and Rashford lashed home the spot-kick to level the tie at 3-3 and send United through on away goals.
"I think just keep a cool head there, the type of things you practise every day," Rashford told BT sport.
"I wanted to take it. Doesn't matter now because we got the goal.
"That is probaly the hardest thing, the wait before, but those moments are what you live for."

PSG had only lost two of their last 50 European games at the Parc des Princes.
Solskjaer, who had half his regular starters missing the game through injury or suspension, had said his team needed to score the opening goal to make it happen.
It could not have started better for the visitors, who went ahead after Lukaku intercepted a weak back pass from Thilo Kehrer, rounded Gianluigi Buffon and slid the ball into the empty net.
But PSG dominated possession and the equaliser seemed inevitable, arriving in the 12th minute when Bernat knocked in Kylian Mbappe's cross at the far post to level the match.
The hosts continued to control possession but United took the advantage again with their next chance.
Buffon let a fierce Rashford shot bounce off his chest into the path of Lukaku who poked home the rebound to continue his rich vein of scoring form.
PSG looked nervous throughout the second half and were unable to find a second goal but they looked to have done enough to make the last eight until substitute Diogo Dalot fired in a speculative shot in stoppage-time.
Skomina called for a review after the ball appeared to hit Kimpembe's arm and, after a lengthy wait, he awarded a penalty.
Buffon dived to the right side but Rashford's strike was too powerful for him.
PSG desperately pushed for the goal that would have sent them through in the four minutes remaining as Edinson Cavani replaced Dani Alves, but United held firm and the home players sunk to the ground in disbelief at the final whistle as their fans celebrated an extraordinary victory.

That would be Zaniolo. As we all know, defensive midfielders are pretty low priced on the index, so it's unfair to compare Cristante (who incidentally hasn't been likened to any legends) to someone of a good pedigree, such as Zaniolo. Incidentally, for anyone who hasn't seen Zaniolo, this is 'that goal' against Sassuolo.

Football: AFC Wimbledon humble West Ham in FA Cup shock

LONDON (REUTERS) - AFC Wimbledon delivered an FA Cup fourth-round shock as the League One strugglers humbled Premier League West Ham United 4-2 in a gripping tie in south-west London on Saturday (Jan 26).
Wimbledon, bottom of England's third tier, took full advantage of a lacklustre West Ham display with Kwesi Appiah putting them ahead before Scott Wagstaff's double either side of halftime saw them lead Manuel Pellegrini's side 3-0.
West Ham, who made six changes from their last Premier League game against Bournemouth, responded with goals by Lucas Perez and Brazilian substitute Felipe Anderson.
After Wimbledon had absorbed some intense pressure from West Ham, Toby Sibbick headed past Adrian in the 88th minute to send them into the fifth round for the first time since the club was formed in 2002.
West Ham are 58 places higher than AFC Wimbledon in the English football pyramid.

Football: Late winner as Aussies down Syria to go through to Asian Cup last 16

AL-AIN, United Arab Emirates (AFP) - Tom Rogic's injury-time thunderbolt settled an Asian Cup thriller on Tuesday (Jan 15) as defending champions Australia beat Syria 3-2 to reach the last 16 and knock out their war-torn rivals.
The result meant the holders finished second in Group B behind Jordan, whose simultaneous 0-0 draw with Palestine gave the Palestinians hope of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.
Syria, vocally backed by thousands of their fans in Al Ain, twice fought back from a goal behind before Rogic slammed home the winner in the third minute of injury time.
Injury-hit Australia, with only six outfield players on the bench, needed just a draw to go through as they kicked off at the same time as Jordan against Palestine.
Syria looked an early threat before Australia started to get a grip on the game and Hibernian striker Jamie Maclaren flashed a header just wide.
There was drama on the half-hour when a Syrian free-kick bounced through a packed penalty area and into the net, but the goal was ruled out for a foul on Mark Milligan.
But Australia were getting close and Awer Mabil, after seeing one raking shot blocked, unleashed a fabulous effort which curled into the top corner four minutes before half-time.
However, the lead lasted just two minutes as Mouaiad Alajaan's cross picked out Omar Khrbin, who on his 25th birthday saw his header saved by Mat Ryan but then gobbled up the rebound.
On 54 minutes, Chris Ikonomidis's shot was hooked away by Omro Al Midani - but the ball was judged to have crossed the line by the additional assistant referee, who was surrounded by Syrian players.

SYRIA PENALTY

The incident silenced the massed ranks of Syrian fans but there was uproar around the stadium shortly afterwards when their team vehemently claimed a penalty for a Milligan handball.
Australia looked firmly in control and they could have had a third goal when substitute Apostolos Giannou saw a low shot cannon off the base of the upright.
But Mexican referee Cesar Ramos threw Syria a lifeline when he gave them a penalty after Omar Al Soma went down in the box - and the striker stroked them level once more with 10 minutes to go.
It looked like Syria would escape with a vital point before Celtic's Rogic, playing the tournament with a broken hand, belted Australia's third from distance.
Meanwhile in Dubai, Jordan were held to a goalless draw by Palestine in a fiery clash to preserve their unbeaten record and progress as Group B winners.
Twice quarter-finalists, in 2004 and 2011, Jordan stunned holders Australia in their opening game before beating Syria 2-0.
But they found plucky Palestine a tougher nut to crack in Abu Dhabi.
Abdallatif Al Bahdari header gave Jordan a scare on the hour-mark of a match that was not one for football purists.
Jordan went close when Ahmad Ersan's long-range blast was blocked by Palestine goalkeeper Rami Hamada before the game petered out with both sides content to take a draw.

Football: Arnautovic brace rescues West Ham in 2-2 draw with Brighton

LONDON (REUTERS) - Marko Arnautovic scored twice in the space of two minutes as West Ham United salvaged a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion after conceding two second half goals at the London Stadium on Wednesday (Jan 2).
After a dull first half, with striker Andy Carroll making his first Premier League start in a year as the lone target man before being replaced at the interval, the game between the two mid-table sides burst into life.
Brighton took the lead in the 57th against the run of play when goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski punched out a corner shot as far as Dale Stephens, who volleyed the ball home from the edge of the area.
The visitors went 2-0 up in the 59th through Shane Duffy, again off a corner kick, who flicked the ball in from a tight angle at the back post.
If West Ham looked to have crumbled, Arnautovic had other thoughts.
The Austrian pulled one back from close range in the 66th and equalised in the 68th when substitute Michail Antonio crossed from the right - with the ball almost over the byline - for him to fire home.

BERN • Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri blamed his side's lack of focus after they fell to a surprise 2-1 Champions League loss to Young Boys in their final group game on Wednesday, but was glad to advance to the last 16 as group leaders.
Guillaume Hoarau scored in both halves for Young Boys in Switzerland but the Italians still took top spot in Group H after Manchester United lost by the same scoreline to Valencia. Juventus finished with 12 points with United on 10, Valencia on eight and Young Boys with four.
"We achieved our objective by winning the group, even on a night where everything seemed to go wrong. Maybe we weren't focused enough," said Allegri.
"We missed so many opportunities and gave away a penalty, so at the end of the day, it was only right that we lost. Things just didn't go our way, but we still won the group and I therefore thank the lads."
The Swiss champions proved too hot to handle for the Cristiano Ronaldo-led Juventus, whose 26-match unbeaten run away from home ended in freezing temperatures in Bern.
Paulo Dybala - who scored a hat-trick in the 3-0 home game in Turin - came off the bench just after the second goal and pulled one back for Allegri's side 10 minutes from time.
"The important thing is that we won the group, even if it's thanks to Valencia beating Manchester United," said the Argentinian forward. "The defeat hurts, because we came here looking for the win, but it should serve as a lesson for the future."

Ronaldo, the record scorer in the elite European competition with 120 goals, started the match despite Juventus already having secured a berth in the knockout rounds.
Allegri wanted to ensure his side avoided being drawn against Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City or Paris Saint-Germain in the next round.
"Now the best part of the Champions League is coming," said Ronaldo, 33, who has lifted the European trophy five times.
"Today we're not happy because we wanted to win in the first half. I could have scored several goals and, if I did, the result would probably have been different.
"I feel good physically. The fact of playing every match is a decision that I take together with my coach."
It was the first away setback this season for Juventus, who have won seven times on the road in Serie A and twice in the Champions League. The last away defeat dates back to November 2017, a 3-2 loss to Sampdoria in Serie A - since then Juventus have had 23 wins and three draws.
Their last Champions League away defeat dates back to September 2017, a 3-0 loss to Barcelona.
Juve face city rivals Torino tomorrow, looking to extend their eight-point lead in the Italian top flight.

Guardiola lauds Sterling for battling racism

Guardiola lauds Sterling for battling racism
LONDON • Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on Tuesday praised his player Raheem Sterling for refusing to be intimidated by the menace of racism in football.
The Englishman allegedly suffered racial abuse from a Chelsea fan during City's 2-0 Premier League defeat at Stamford Bridge last Saturday.
Four fans have since been temporarily suspended by Chelsea as investigations continue and, yesterday, The Sun identified one of them as Dean Silsby. He admitted to hurling vulgarities and was sorry, but denied any racist behaviour.
On Tuesday, The Daily Mail had identified the man who was caught on camera, Colin Wing, as the main perpetrator.
Guardiola, speaking about the controversy for the first time, backed Sterling and hailed his decision to speak out.
"I was concerned with what happened but he made a statement on (his) Instagram (page) and was quite clear about his thoughts," he said. "He's an incredible person, an incredible human being.
"It's tough in the 21st century to still be in this position, to have problems with diversity. We have to be better, everyone."
The Spaniard said that racism was rooted in society and insisted more had to be done to combat it.
"People focus on football, but it's not just in football. You'd think in football, we'd be safe, but racism is everywhere," he said. "We have to fight for human rights to make a better society for the future. Today it's dangerous, not just England, all across Europe."
German forward Leroy Sane praised his teammate for showing great dignity in dealing with the abuse, saying: "He is a strong guy, a good guy. He can handle it and he is not letting it get him down."
Separately, Herman Ouseley, who received hate mail earlier this week after talking about the Sterling abuse, revealed he was leaving at the end of the term as the head of Kick It Out, the football anti-racism group he founded in 1993.
He felt the English football authorities had yet to come together to target racism in the game with a "coherent strategy", but he had to step down "to concentrate on some other responsibilities".
"The stuff that Sterling put into the public arena is so important, and that needs to be kept on the highest burner," the British MP said. "A lot more people go to a game and don't want to have that sort of s*** going on - that's progress. But prejudice is still there."
