Solskjaer laments 'poorest' performance

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted his Manchester United team had taken "a big step backwards" after turning in the worst display of his four-month reign, as Wolves sent them packing from the FA Cup with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
Marcus Rashford's added-time strike was not enough as Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota fired Nuno Espirito Santo's side into their first semi-final appearance since 1998.
This was United's second straight defeat and Solskjaer conceded "quite a lot was missing today" from his players, who were second-best at Molineux.
The United caretaker manager said: "It was the poorest performance we've had.
"We never had the urgency and quality on the ball, even though without the ball in the first half, we did okay.
"There was a lack of urgency going forward and a lack of forward passing and a lack of regains.
"We felt too comfortable in possession and we never managed to put their goalkeeper or defenders under pressure. Today, we got what we deserved because we never deserved to win this game."

Wolves captain Conor Coady showing his delight after attacking midfielder Diogo Jota scored their second goal in the 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Manchester United at the Molineux Stadium on Saturday.

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER, interim Manchester United boss, on his team's poor display in the loss to Wolves in the FA Cup.

However, the Norwegian was still upbeat for the rest of the season, claiming that United had "much to play for" as they aim for a top-four finish in the Premier League and progression past Barcelona in the last eight of the Champions League.
He said: "We're in a great position in the league, we've got the Champions League. You can't sulk for too long. We've got to look forward and put the result today behind us.
"Manchester United in April and May always find their form. We can't wait for the challenge when Barcelona come."
While Solskjaer will not lift any domestic silverware this term, newly promoted Wolves, who had upset Liverpool in the third round, are in with a huge shout of winning their first trophy since lifting the League Cup in 1980.
And Santo, who has yet to win a major honour in his managerial career, paid tribute to "the amazing support of our fans believing in us", with the 12th man playing its part in spurring his players on against the Red Devils.
The Portuguese said: "It means a lot of course. The FA Cup is the oldest competition and we played well.
"The noise was fantastic. We achieved it together. Now, we have to prepare for the next one."
Wolves captain Conor Coady also felt it was "a deserved result" as the home side "nullified them from start to finish".
He added: "We were outstanding. They are an unbelievable club with talented players, (but) we said before in the changing rooms, we have the chance to make history and we now have the chance to go through again."

Abramovich steps in amid racism outrage
LONDON • Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has requested reports on the club's attempts to clamp down on the fans who sang anti-Semitic songs during the Europa League tie against Vidi in Budapest on Thursday.
The Blues have asked the Hungarian club for close-circuit television footage that they hope will enable them to identify the vocal minority of travelling fans responsible for the chanting, which has disgusted Abramovich and others connected to the club.
Manager Maurizio Sarri has told The Daily Mail he "condemned every form of racism and discrimination". Having experienced it himself while managing in Italy, he also felt it was not just an English problem as "there are some stupid people all over the world".
Midfielder Cesc Fabregas agreed, saying he was happy for the club to be taught a lesson if it led to better behaviour from their supporters.
The Spaniard said: "The focus now is on Chelsea for what happened. Unfortunately, if we look around carefully all over the world, all sports, all football clubs, we will find things like that.
"The people that did it, they will be punished for it and they will be taught a big lesson in their lives. The quicker we get rid of these people, the better. This is not the real face of Chelsea."
Chelsea will issue life bans to any miscreants whom they are able to identify, although that may not be straightforward because the incident took place at an away ground where they do not control the ticketing arrangements.
Abramovich has been kept informed of Chelsea's attempts to combat racist behaviour, which include cooperating with an inquiry by London police into a supporter who allegedly racially abused Raheem Sterling during last Saturday's Premier League game against Manchester City.
The club have since temporarily suspended four people over that incident.
While Abramovich, who is a Russian Jew, has not been to home games this term after being denied a visa to enter the United Kingdom in May, he has followed Chelsea's progress closely and is passionate about eradicating a problem that has afflicted the club for years.
He took a prominent role this year in Chelsea launching a campaign against anti-Semitism, which is a problem among some fans that is exacerbated when they play Tottenham, who are known to have a big Jewish fan base.
While Uefa is still looking into the reports before deciding on any further action, a possible sanction could result in the closure of a section of Stamford Bridge for a Europa League knockout tie.
The ongoing racial storm threatens to overshadow their league game at Brighton, where Sarri's men are hoping to build on their morale-boosting win over champions City last weekend.
But Seagulls manager Chris Hughton feels off-field events will have little bearing on the pitch, saying: "They've adapted very well (to Sarri), any team that beats City at the moment has to have quality. The likes of Chelsea have so many threats that it's difficult to cope with all of them."

Football: Bilbao's Williams strikes twice as Sevilla's hopes fade

(REUTERS) - Sevilla's hopes of staying in the La Liga title race faded further with a 2-0 defeat on Sunday (Jan 13) at struggling Athletic Bilbao, who boosted their chances of survival with two wonderful goals from Inaki Williams.
The striker, making his 100th consecutive appearance in La Liga, ended a goal drought of more than two years at his club's San Mames stadium in spectacular style with brilliant goals in each half.
The defeat left Sevilla third in the standings on 33 points, seven behind leaders Barcelona who could stretch their advantage over the Andalusians to 10 if they beat Eibar later on Sunday.
Athletic meanwhile climbed up to 16th on 22 points, moving three away from the relegation zone.
Williams gave them the lead midway through the first half, cutting in from the left wing to find the far top corner with a scorching strike - his first goal at home since netting against Eibar in December 2016.
Sevilla had beaten Athletic 3-1 at San Mames three days previously in a Copa del Rey last-16 game but for most of the game were outmuscled by Gaizka Garitano's side, who are fighting against a potential first-ever relegation from the top flight.
Dutch midfielder Quincy Promes came closest to scoring for the visitors with a long strange strike which brushed past the far post, while Argentine playmaker Ever Banega saw a shot squirm just wide from the edge of the area.
But Williams, who also scored the winner at Celta Vigo last week, sealed the victory with another impressive effort in the 82nd minute, knocking the ball beyond a defender and then dribbling around the goalkeeper before tapping in.

Football: Yoshida not worried about his lack of familiarity with the Lions ahead of Solomon Islands friendly

SINGAPORE - With just four training sessions before his first game in charge - an international friendly against the Solomon Islands on Saturday (June 8) - Singapore's new national football coach Tatsuma Yoshida admitted there is "not enough time" to fully implement his ideas and philosophy.
However, the 44-year-old said he is not worried. At the pre-match press conference at Hotel Miramar on Friday, he added: "My guys are working hard, and they have good motivation.
"It is my first game and although it is a friendly, it is important for us to play hard and get a good result."
Despite having limited time with Yoshida before tomorrow's game, Singapore skipper Hariss Harun is already noticing the subtle differences.
The 28-year-old said: "He is more in-depth in terms of the finer details when it comes to supporting our team-mates, and things like the angle of the pass, where to pass and where to move.
"It is not that previous coaches didn't work on these things but we spend more time with the new coach on such details as we try to find options to get out of tight situations we will find ourselves in during games."
World No. 160 Singapore will play the 139th-ranked Solomon Islands on Saturday and 140th-ranked Myanmar on Tuesday at the National Stadium but they also have their eye on maintaining their unbeaten run to secure more ranking points for a better seeding in next month's World Cup qualifying draw.

In the last international football window, the Lions beat Malaysia (168th) 1-0 and held Oman (86th) to a 1-1 draw before losing on penalties.
Hariss said: "We don't know much about the Solomon Islands but we respect the fact they are ranked higher than us.
"That being said, they are not miles away from us. We have done well to play attacking football and score goals recently. We have the players to try and continue on this way and against teams that are around our level, we have to play more positively and score more.
"We are happy to play at the National Stadium and we have to make our homeground advantage count."
But the Solomon Islands - comprising footballers who mostly play for semi-professional teams in their home country or Fiji - will not be sitting ducks, after a three-week training stint in the Netherlands where they played against local amateur sides as preparation for the Pacific Games in July.
Solomon Islands coach Wim Rijsbergen, a two-time World Cup finalist with Holland and former Indonesia coach, said: "We had a good camp and hopefully we can give a good game.
"I can't tell you much (about how we play) but we have worked hard. Hopefully we can see the results against Singapore and there will be a surprise in our favour."
His captain Benjamin Totori added: "I have watched clips of Singapore on YouTube and we know it's going to be a tough game. We beat Chinese Taipei 1-0 in March and Macau 4-1 last year, we are confident we can keep winning in Asia."
