Solskjaer seeks immediate rebound

LONDON • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will look for a response from his Manchester United players after the first domestic loss of his reign when they face Wolves in the FA Cup quarter-finals today.
He tasted defeat for the first time in English football as his side went down 2-0 at Arsenal in the Premier League last weekend, but such has been the reservoir of goodwill built up that it is a matter of when, and not if, he lands the job on a full-time basis.
Some media reports have suggested that Solskjaer could be confirmed as manager during the forthcoming international break, which follows the Wolves tie.
While United officials have offered no guidance on whether the appointment is imminent, it is understood the club and Norwegian outfit Molde have put in place a compensation package should he take on the role for good, with a reported £500,000 (S$897,320) fee agreed.
If the Red Devils can navigate their way past Wolves, not only will the clamour for Solskjaer to put pen to paper reach fever pitch, but they will also have "a real chance" of lifting their 13th FA Cup at Wembley in May.
Sergio Romero, who is the designated Cup goalkeeper, told the club website the team were ready to go on another streak - United were on a club-record nine-game away winning run before the Arsenal game - at Molineux.

"We want to be involved in the very last day that this competition is taking place and give ourselves the chance to lift a trophy, and make everyone at the club and of course our fans very happy.
"We're really excited about the game ahead of us, it's a really important game against a team that have done really well this season. So it's a big challenge, but we're prepared and confident."
Brazil midfielder Fred, who could also feature against Nuno Espirito Santo's men, agreed with his teammate, insisting that United would be "going for the win".
He added: "They're a great team with very good players. But we're well aware that it won't be easy, so we're ready for it."
Solskjaer will be expected to rotate his squad as full-back Ashley Young is suspended, but the injury list is clearing up with Ander Herrera, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all in contention to play a part.

But, whichever team he puts out, the 46-year-old knows Wolves are a significant obstacle to United's hopes of silverware, having already claimed the scalps of Chelsea and Liverpool, while holding Manchester City to a draw at home this term.

LONDON • Investigators recovered a body from the wreckage of a plane carrying Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala in the English Channel on Wednesday.
The body was yesterday transported to Britain for identification, which will be done by the coroner in the county of Dorset. According to news website WalesOnline, there is "no definitive timescale on this".
Britain's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said that it was ending the operation to bring the crashed plane to the surface due to bad weather.
The plane was flying the 28-year-old from Nantes to Cardiff when it disappeared near the Channel island of Guernsey on Jan 21, along with 59-year-old pilot David Ibbotson.
Sala had signed for Cardiff just two days earlier for a club-record fee of £15 million (S$26.3 million).
His disappearance prompted outpourings of grief across the sporting world and, after local search operations were suspended, a shipwreck hunter hired by Sala's family, with funds donated by fellow footballers, found the wreckage on Sunday.
The AAIB, who then took over the operation, said on Wednesday: "In challenging conditions, the body previously seen amid the wreckage was successfully recovered.
"The operation was carried out in as dignified a way as possible and the families were kept informed of progress.
"The weather forecast is poor for the foreseeable future and so the difficult decision was taken to bring the overall operation to a close."

 
 
 
It added video footage captured by a remotely operated vehicle is expected to "provide valuable evidence for our safety investigation".
The AAIB intends to publish an interim report on the accident later this month.
But, while Cardiff continue to reel from the tragedy, Nantes have consulted lawyers to explore legal options to ensure Cardiff pay the transfer fee for Sala.
The Bluebirds are understood to have received a legal letter from the French club demanding payment within 10 days of a sum believed to be about £5 million after they did not respond to an e-mail request.
That would represent the first instalment of the fee agreed between both clubs.
Cardiff's first payment was due on Jan 26 - seven days after completing the signing - and, after it had not been received last week, Nantes took action.
With the club insisting they are not ready to deal with financial matters before a body has been found and a funeral taken place, the dispute is likely to continue.
They are believed to have obtained insurance for Sala on completing his signing before confirming their liability for the transfer fee by lodging his registration with the Football Association of Wales on the day of his flight.

LONDON • It was defeat on a sunny Easter Sunday afternoon at Goodison Park that signalled the end for David Moyes at Manchester United. And that was merely a routine 2-0 loss.
This was a humiliating 4-0 Premier League defeat at the start of a supposed new dawn. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has inherited, and is presiding over, a shambles.
United players require a reality check, their latest manager had declared last Friday. It landed heavily on them yesterday as Marco Silva's slick, expansive and clinical team recorded Everton's biggest win over United since October 1984.
The embarrassment for the Old Trafford club was not confined to the scoreline.
It was writ large in the apathetic displays of their over-paid players, in Anthony Martial diving for a non-existent penalty, in David de Gea throwing the ball at a dawdling Diogo Dalot and in the visitors starting with the same central defence as in Moyes' last stand in April 2014.
There they were, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, the latter getting himself injured yet again to add to the sense of chaotic deja-vu.
At least he offered a semblance of commitment that was otherwise absent on an appalling afternoon for United. Champions League qualification is the least of their worries.

A sorry Solskjaer admitted to Sky Sports after the match that his team just did not perform.
"From the first whistle, everything went wrong. I just want to apologise to the fans. They're the only people with the badge on today who can hold their heads high, because we can't," said the Norwegian, whose team have now lost six of their past eight games and five straight away matches for the first time since 1981.
"Everton were better than us at all the basics. There are so many things that we need to do better to get a result.
"That was not worthy of a Manchester United team. We hold our hands up and apologise to everyone associated with the club. We have a perfect chance to make amends on Wednesday (against Manchester City)."
Everton were superb and battered the visitors not only physically but also in terms of quality, desire and work rate too.
United, fielding three changes to the side outclassed in Barcelona last week, were truly pathetic. A two-goal deficit at half-time flattered their spineless display.
Their refusal, reluctance or inability to press their opponents contributed to a comfortable first-half stroll for the hosts.
To put it into context, Solskjaer's men ran 8.03km less than Everton in total - the biggest negative difference for United in a Premier League game since defeat by Spurs in August (10.2km less).
Brazilian Richarlison fired the Toffees ahead as early as the 13th minute with an acrobatic high volley. Gylfi Sigurdsson made it 2-0 with a low drive that goalkeeper de Gea was slow to react to.
Lucas Digne then blasted in the third in the 56th minute after de Gea punched out a corner to the French full-back as United struggled to get even a foot in the game.
Icelandic playmaker Sigurdsson then put substitute Theo Walcott through with a clever pass through the legs of Victor Lindelof which the striker confidently converted.
Former United defender Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, blasted the team after the loss.
"I'm furious, the fact that he (Solskjaer) has to go over and apologise to the fans at the whistle is embarrassing," he said.
"There's some bad weeds not only in the garden but Japanese knotweed attacking the entire house and they need it eradicating.
"I have 100 per cent faith in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but he needs backing and this performance was rancid. I would imagine the more Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees these players, he will be losing faith in them."
United remain in sixth on 64 points, two behind fifth-placed Chelsea as their top-four hopes suffered a huge blow.
Everton manager Silva said he was happy with a clean sheet and United could surely do with one in their next match.
But that seems improbable now as City, who seem unstoppable in their title run-in, will be visiting Old Trafford relishing a big win on Wednesday.

SINGAPORE - They had a taste of blood, and now the Young Lions want more.
Tipped by many to struggle in the Singapore Premier League (SPL) this season, Fandi Ahmad's charges pulled off a massive upset last week when they beat a Hougang United team boasting several senior national players 2-1.
The young guns, lying seventh in the nine-team table, are hoping to build on the victory when they take on sixth-placed and SPL pre-season title hopefuls Home United on Saturday (April 6) at the Bishan Stadium.
Striker Saifullah Akbar, who scored the winning goal against Hougang, said he and many of his teammates benefited from a three-week overseas stint with the national Under-22 team, also coached by Fandi.
Fifteen Young Lions players were among the 24-strong U-22 squad that went on a two-week training camp in Shizuoka, Japan, before playing qualification matches in Mongolia for next year's AFC Under-23 Championship.
Singapore failed to progress to next year's finals after finishing second in their group. They had drawn 1-1 with Hong Kong and North Korea and beaten Mongolia 3-1.
Saifullah, 20, said: "In Japan and Mongolia, we played against opponents who were physically, tactically and technically stronger.

 
"Doing well on both trips gave us the belief we could match the top SPL teams when we returned here. And that has been key - belief."
Young Lions skipper Joshua Pereira added: "In Japan, we had double training sessions every day, and did not have outside distractions we have back in Singapore like school, work or National Service.
"The win against Hougang felt exceptional, but we know we have to keep our feet on the ground and try to do it again in our next game against Home."
Fandi, 56, refused to get carried away by the win over Hougang - in pre-season, he had simply targeted avoiding the wooden spoon - but added that he was pleased with the competition among his players.
He said: "Everyone wants a place in the team, and everyone's fighting for it.
"The SEA Games (in the Philippines from Nov 30-Dec 11) is the next big target and the players are all eager to prove themselves."
Despite his team's fine form, Fandi said they will start today's match as the underdogs.
Home have kept three straight clean sheets and also defeated Laotian champions Lao Toyota 1-0 in the AFC Cup on Tuesday.
But Home coach Saswadimata Dasuki is fretting over his attack.
Last season's 13-goal forward Shahril Ishak and Australian midfielder Isaka Cernak are sidelined with ankle injuries while South Korean midfielder Song Ui-yong, with 10 goals last campaign, is struggling with a groin problem.
Saswadimata said he was impressed by the Young Lions, noting: "They were very disciplined and very organised, both defensively and going forward.
"They are young, but they compensate by working really hard for each other and being organised.
"We will find it tough to break the Young Lions down."
