Vow of 'continued success'

LONDON • Shortly after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was announced as Manchester United's permanent manager yesterday, the British media reported that many of his players were already informed of the decision a day earlier.
None of them leaked the news but, for someone who had spent 11 seasons at Old Trafford as a player and has exceeded expectations as a caretaker manager the past few months, it was no surprise that Solskjaer would eventually return to a place he calls "home" for good.
The 46-year-old Norwegian, who has guided United to 14 wins in 19 matches in all competitions since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December, was appointed yesterday on a three-year contract.
"This is the job that I always dreamt of doing and I'm beyond excited to have the chance to lead the club long-term and, hopefully, deliver the continued success that our amazing fans deserve," said Solskjaer in a club statement.
"From the first day I arrived, I felt at home at this special club. It was an honour to be a Manchester United player, and then to start my coaching career here."
Initially viewed as purely a stop-gap option while the club searched for an established manager, with Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino widely reported to be their target in the summer, the former United striker has thoroughly impressed with his attacking brand of football and now has his reward.

  • 32

  • Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment at United in December, the Red Devils have won more points than any other Premier League team. They have 32 points from 13 matches, ahead of Liverpool (31 from 14).

After instantly turning around United's form - they have won 10 of their 13 Premier League games under him - he sealed his job with the dramatic comeback win at Paris Saint-Germain which earned the club a Champions League quarter-final clash with Barcelona.
His positive, inclusive approach to the players, supported by Alex Ferguson's former assistant Mike Phelan, transformed the mood in the club, a stark contrast to the atmosphere in the latter stages of Mourinho's reign, where fans had grown weary of the Portuguese's squabbles and defensive football.
That was one of the main reasons that United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward had chosen the Norwegian to be the caretaker.

  • Solskjaer's to-do list

  • Key contract decisions

Besides getting goalkeeper David de Gea to pen a deal extension, Manchester United's new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must also turn his attention to Ander Herrera and Juan Mata, whose deals expire in the summer. Herrera, 29, has been a crucial player in defensive midfield under Solskjaer and, with French champions Paris Saint-Germain lurking, the United boss must convince the Spaniard to stay.

    Defensive gaps

With Antonio Valencia, 33, set to leave, United need a new right-back, especially since Ashley Young is nearing 34. Centre-backs Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling have been rejuvenated under Solskjaer but a central defensive recruit is needed. Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly, Inter Milan's Milan Skriniar and Tottenham's Toby Alderweireld have all been linked with the club.

    Blooding youngsters

Solskjaer has continued United's proud tradition of promoting their talented academy players and he must do the same next season. Angel Gomes (18), James Garner (18), Tahith Chong (19) and Mason Greenwood (17) have played under Solskjaer in the absence of injured first-team players, after not playing at all under Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer, who scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for United, also restore a winning mentality at England's most successful club with a record 20 domestic titles.
"Since coming in as caretaker manager in December, the results Ole has delivered speak for themselves," said Woodward. "More than just performances and results, Ole brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and as a coach, coupled with a desire to give young players their chance and a deep understanding of the culture of the club."
The news of Solskjaer's appointment took social media by storm, with former and current United players all showing their support.
Former defender and Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville said: "We've had a lot of change at the club in the last four or five years with different managers and it hasn't worked. Ole has brought a level of happiness and excitement back to the fans.
"There is a lot of hard work still to do in the coming months and years to get Man United back to where they were before.
"I saw Louis van Gaal the other day say that Solskjaer's football is like Mourinho's but winning. Van Gaal's football at United was the worst I've ever seen and Mourinho's was far better, even though it wasn't acceptable in terms of what the fans want to see."
Ex-goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, part of the 1999 treble-winning team with Solskjaer, added: "I have to credit the club for the timing and also the bravery for doing this.
"I think it's a fantastic appointment and it's a great opportunity to bring a lot of Manchester United back to Manchester United."
Current players like Chris Smalling and Marcus Rashford also expressed their delight on social media, saying "Ole's at the wheel, congrats boss!" and "Congrats boss (fist bump emoji)" respectively.
While the future of Phelan - who is contracted to Australian club Central Coast Mariners as their sporting director - is still up in the air, another of Ferguson's former assistants believes that Solskjaer has what it takes to achieve success.
"I've been impressed with Ole in press conferences. He's never on the defensive, never looks for excuses and he also addresses the things he is not happy about," Rene Meulensteen told Sky Sports.
"But the most important thing is he knows the club, he knows the DNA of the club he was part of."
Fifth-placed United, who are locked in a battle for Champions League qualification spots with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham, host Watford in the league tomorrow.

Football: Guardiola trusts Man City to resolve FFP allegations

MANCHESTER, England (REUTERS) - Pep Guardiola is confident his achievements at Manchester City will not be tarnished by Uefa's investigation into alleged Financial Fair Play (FFP) breaches and trusted the club to resolve the matter, the Spanish manager said on Friday (March 8).
Uefa opened a formal investigation into the alleged FFP violations on Thursday, a move Premier League champions City welcomed in a bid to end speculation surrounding the club's sponsorship agreements.
When asked whether he was concerned his achievements at City would be tainted by the allegations, Guardiola told reporters: "No, absolutely not.
"The club made a statement, so I can't add more than that. The club are open, hopefully it can finish as soon as possible.
"I trust a lot what the club has done, because I know them and hopefully they can solve it as soon as possible."
German publication Der Spiegel reported in November that City's Abu Dhabi owners inflated sponsorship agreements in order to comply with FFP requirements.
City's statement on Thursday said accusations of financial irregularities were entirely false.

City host eighth-placed Watford on Saturday and Guardiola hailed their manager Javi Gracia, who looks set to lead them to their best-ever finish in the Premier League.
"It's incredible what he's done, one of the toughest games we had," Guardiola, who was voted February's Premier League manager of the month, said.
"In the last nine games, they have physicality, quality one-on-one, strong in the air, well organised... what he's done has been incredible."
Guardiola was unsure if centre back Aymeric Laporte would play a part but confirmed midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was still unfit after suffering a hamstring injury in last weekend's 1-0 win at Bournemouth.
"All of them are getting better. Ayme (Laporte) is back, he trained the last two to three days but I don't know if he's available for tomorrow," said Guardiola.
"Fernandinho is out, Kevin (De Bruyne) is not right, not fit. John Stones is not fit either but the other ones are OK."

Football: Solskjaer hails impact of 'happy boy' Pogba

Football: Solskjaer hails impact of 'happy boy' Pogba

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Manchester United are now seeing the Paul Pogba he knows from his time in charge of the club's reserve team after the French World Cup winner scored twice in a 3-1 win over Huddersfield on Boxing Day.
Solskjaer's reign as caretaker manager began with a 5-1 win at Cardiff on Saturday, and his dream start continued with a resounding welcome by the Old Trafford faithful.
Nemanja Matic scored the opener, but it was Pogba's second half display and the Frenchman's two goals that spoke volumes about the change in mood at the club in the week since Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager and replaced, until the end of the season, by the popular Norwegian.
Solskjaer coached Pogba as a youngster before the midfielder left for Juventus and United had to pay a then world record £89 million to bring him back in 2016.
"That's the Paul I know," said Solskjaer.
"The Paul I've known since he was in the reserves and youth team with me.
"He has always been a happy boy, he's always had a big smile on his face."

Pogba cut a less than happy figure for much of this season as he clashed with Mourinho and was left on the bench for the Portuguese's final three league games in charge.
"When you score a goal, or two, of course you are happy," Solskjaer said.
"But when you play football for Man United you should be happy. Of course it's a responsibility, but it's an honour and a privilege.
"Paul loves playing for this club. He's a Man United boy through and through, a kid who knows what it means to play for Man United."
DE GEA'S 'DEFINING MOMENT'
The outcome could have been very different, though, but for David de Gea's stunning save to keep out an effort from Laurent Depoitre moments before Pogba's first and United's second goal.
"Dave's save was the defining moment. One of the best saves I've seen," said Solskjaer.
United swiftly went down the other end and Juan Mata and Ander Herrera teed up Pogba to convert an accurate finish from 16 yards.
Pogba had only scored twice in a Premier League game once - in the derby victory at Manchester City in April that ranked as one of the highlights of Mourinho's time in charge.
But he would repeat the trick in Solskjaer's second game in charge, exchanging passes with Jesse Lingard, before beating Jonas Lossl with a spectacular right-foot finish from 25 yards after 77 minutes.
Solskjaer has had a whirlwind week after temporarily leaving his role in charge of Molde to help out the club where he spent 11 seasons as a player.
"It was extra special of course," said Solskjaer of his return as manager to Old Trafford. "But I was surprisingly calm, the boys settled me down really quickly.
"It's special to walk out there, hearing the crowd again singing my song - normally they started after I scored a goal, not before the game after I walked out!
"But it's humbling and made me really proud. Hopefully, my family are proud and my family back home in Norway watching on telly.
"It was a great day, I will never ever forget, I'll never forget these two games."
Huddersfield claimed a late consolation as substitute Steve Mounie outjumped Pogba to head on an 88th minute Alex Pritchard free-kick, setting up Mathias Zanka who slotted in from close range.
"We have seen again today that they play with freedom," said Huddersfield manager David Wagner of Solskjaer's new-look United.
"They penetrate the ball in the right moments. In the first half we came under tremendous pressure but they play with freedom and they still have world-class players. We have seen that today."

Football: Sevilla leave it late to snatch draw against Leganes

MADRID (AFP) - Sevilla lost ground at the top of La Liga on Sunday (Dec 23) despite Wissam Ben Yedder’s late equaliser rescuing them a point against struggling Leganes.
Mikel Vesga’s header looked set to earn Leganes a valuable victory in their fight against relegation but Yedder sneaked in to score in the 91st minute and earn Sevilla a 1-1 draw.
The visitors were the ones celebrating at the final whistle but they head into the winter break two points behind Atletico Madrid and five adrift of leaders Barcelona.
Sevilla had to play the second half with 10 men after Franco Vazquez was sent off during half-time for dissent.  “The team has demonstrated its fight,” coach Pablo Machin said.
“Wissam just has that instinct around goal – I don’t know if it feels like a victory, but it shows the team has soul and courage.”
Leganes could have wrapped up the win as they twice hit the woodwork, the second time just moments before Ben Yedder equalised at the other end.  But they have now won two and drawn three of their last five games, an encouraging run that has put four points between them and the relegation places.
Sevilla had been top almost exactly a month ago and even if few would see Machin’s side as genuine title challengers, this was a match they would have hoped to win.
Key absentees like Ever Banega and Pablo Sarabia were missed while a rain-soaked Butarque made playing conditions difficult.  Leganes were ahead after five minutes as Vesga rose high to meet Allan Nyom’s chipped ball into the area, and flicked it into the corner.
Twice they were denied a second by the woodwork, each time from headers, as Dimitrios Siovas and then Youssef En-Nesyri watched efforts crash against the crossbar.
Roque Mesa had nodded onto the post as well for 10-man Sevilla and it was his cross that supplied the equaliser in the first minute of added time. Yedder nipped in at the back post and, completely unmarked, made no mistake.
There was late drama earlier on Sunday too as Cristiano Piccini scored a 94th-minute winner for Valencia against Huesca.  Huesca, who are bottom of the table, had pulled level after Juan Hernandez’s penalty cancelled out Dani Parejo’s opener at Mestalla. Piccini’s goal moves Valencia up to eighth.

Football: Napoli stumble at Fiorentina and trail Juventus by 8pts, Martinez gets Inter back to winning ways

MILAN (AFP) - Napoli could finish the weekend trailing Italian Serie A leaders Juventus by 11 points, after Carlo Ancelotti's wasteful side stuttered to a 0-0 draw at Fiorentina on Saturday (Feb 9).
Fiorentina goalkeeper Alban Lafont produced a string of saves to deny Piotr Zielinski and Dries Mertens as Napoli failed to score away from home for the third game running.
"We dropped two points that we would've deserved for attacking from start to finish," Ancelotti told Sky Sport Italia.
"In some ways, it was an impeccable performance, but we weren't clinical enough in front of goal and were forced to make do with a point."
Hosts Fiorentina drew for the 11th time in 23 matches this season. Their best chance came just after half-time when French midfielder Jordan Veretout was denied by an excellent stop from Alex Meret.
Inter Milan, in third, got back to winning ways with Argentine Lautaro Martinez coming off the bench late and scoring the only goal after 79 minutes in a 1-0 victory at Parma.
Radja Nainggolan set up the Argentinian to give Luciano Spalletti's side their first goal and league win of 2019.
Inter are now nine points behind Napoli (52 points), with Roma in fourth and Lazio fifth (both have 38 points) after their wins over Chievo and Empoli earlier this week.
Unbeaten Juventus could stretch their advantage to double digits on Sunday when they travel to mid-table Sassuolo.

Football: Guardiola hopeful De Bruyne fit for crucial Liverpool clash

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Kevin de Bruyne could return from injury as Manchester City bid to inflict Liverpool's first Premier League defeat of the season and put pressure on them in the title race, City manager Pep Guardiola said on Wednesday (Jan 2).
The return of De Bruyne would boost City's hopes of beating Liverpool and reducing their lead at the top to four points.
It would also be a filip to their title defence which suffered a serious blow with three defeats in their last five league matches.
The 27-year-old Belgian midfielder, City's player of the year, has endured an injury-affected campaign, restricting him to just six league appearances.
He was out of action from August until late October with a knee injury, then suffered a calf problem in early November that sidelined him for more than a month.
Having returned again in mid-December, he suffered a muscle problem during the defeat at Leicester on Boxing Day.
Guardiola, though, is hopeful De Bruyne can feature on Thursday as City look to drag themselves back into the title race.
"He trained today," said Guardiola at his eve of match press conference.
"Tomorrow (Thursday), we need another check in the morning but he is much better."

'THE BEST TEAM IN EUROPE'

In contrast to City's indifferent recent league record Jurgen Klopp's side have won nine league matches in a row, and have the best defensive record, conceding eight goals in 20 matches this season.
During that nine-match winning run, Liverpool have kept six clean sheets and conceded just three goals, and Guardiola acknowledges his own team have to improve their defensive record, as well as becoming more ruthless in attack.

"You have to see how many chances we concede," said Guardiola.
"We are the second-best team in Europe in terms of the chances we create, so we are not precise enough.
"In the past few games, we have conceded more goals than usual but the number of chances we have conceded is not too much."
Guardiola has tried to play down suggestions defeat on Thursday would effectively end City's chances of retaining the title they won with a competition record of 100 points last May.
"The reality is clear. We are seven points down, but it is the second game of the second half of the season, so there are a lot of points to play for," said Guardiola.
"I have the feeling it is a big opportunity for us to reduce the gap.
"Everybody is asking what will happen if we lose but we are going to try to win.
"It is our chance to fight for the Premier League, to go as far as possible," added the 47-year-old Spaniard.
Liverpool have dropped just six points all season, and Guardiola believes they are currently the most consistent team in Europe.
"It is Liverpool, the best team in all England in history.
"We can beat them. I know today nobody trusts us but it is what it is.
"They are in the moment the best team in Europe, in their consistency, the way they control the details in their game."
