Football: Fulham dent Everton's Europa League hopes with 2-0 win

LONDON (REUTERS) - Relegated Fulham dealt Everton's hopes of Europa League action next season a heavy blow at Craven Cottage on Saturday (April 13) as they beat their visitors 2-0 with goals from captain Tom Cairney and Ryan Babel.
After an action-packed but goalless first half, Cairney broke the deadlock just after the restart when Babel raced down the left and into the area before cutting the ball back to him.
Cairney, one of the Cottagers' promotion-winning heroes last season, lashed his first Premier League goal in low past Everton keeper Jordan Pickford, putting his side on track for only their fifth win of an otherwise miserable campaign in the top flight.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed levelling affairs by the narrowest of margins 10 minutes later when his curled shot beat Sergio Rico in the Fulham goal but bounced off the post and away.
But Babel sealed the win for Fulham in the 69th minute, taking off on a solo run from the halfway line before coolly chipping the ball over Pickford.
Everton's loss means they stay ninth on 46 points. The Merseysiders have been climbing back into contention for Europa League action next season with their recent run of strong results, but need to reach seventh place to secure that.
"We expected a tough match. We didn't perform, and we were unbalanced on the pitch. It was a bad day for us," Everton boss Marco Silva told reporters after the match.
He said the repeated breaks in the second half for injuries and medical treatment, that led to eight minutes of added time being played at the end of the game, had broken up play and prevented his side from finding their rhythm.
Fulham's win leaves the already-relegated Londoners second from bottom on 20 points. Their first victory under caretaker manager Scott Parker was also their first win over Everton in their last 11 meetings in the Premier League era.
"I thought we were superb from start to finish," Parker told reporters.
"The result is the by-product of all the work we've done in the last nine days. The fans have not had a lot to shout about recently, but I like to think the result today eases that a bit. Craven Cottage was alive," he said.
"We showed some real fight and determination."

Football: PSG buy Argentina midfielder Paredes for estimated 47m before Man United clash

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain have completed the signing of Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes on a four-and-a-half-year deal, the French football champions announced on Tuesday (Jan 29).
The 25-year-old put pen to paper on a contract until 2023 after completing a medical in Qatar. No transfer fee was disclosed, although press reports have put the fee at €47 million (S$72.7 million) from Russian team Zenit Saint Petersburg.
"Leandro's arrival will keep the momentum, both on the pitch and among our supporters, ahead of the major events coming up. Exciting times lie ahead," PSG's Qatari president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said in a club statement.
The Ligue 1 leaders were looking to strengthen their midfield ahead of their Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester United, with Marco Verratti sidelined with an ankle injury and Adrien Rabiot frozen out after refusing to sign a new contract.
PSG go to Old Trafford in the first leg of that tie on Feb 12, and they are currently sweating on the fitness of Neymar, who suffered a metatarsal injury last week.
Paredes, who has won nine caps but was not part of Argentina's squad at last year's World Cup, previously played for Boca Juniors and Roma. He moved to Zenit in 2017.

Football: Taxi driver charged with attempted murder after Man Utd fan stabbed in Paris

PARIS (AFP) - A taxi driver who allegedly stabbed a Manchester United fan in the chest after the club's midweek Champions League victory over PSG was Saturday (March 9) charged with attempted murder, a judicial source said.
French police had arrested a man suspected of the stabbing on Friday (March 8) and he has now been detained in custody.
According to the Sky Sports television channel, the 44-year-old United fan was travelling in a taxi with friends to the centre of Paris after the game which the English side won 3-1 when the driver objected to their boisterous celebrations.
"The driver pulled over to get them out of his taxi, before pulling out a knife and threatening the female passenger in the group," claimed Sky.
"The victim tried to intervene to protect her, but the driver then turned the knife on him, stabbing him in the chest with what's been described as 'a large blade'."
Manchester United sent their support to the fan.
"We were shocked to hear about the incident with one of our fans who was stabbed while in Paris for the Champions League game," United said in a statement.
"Everyone at the club wishes him well during his recovery."
A French police source confirmed a stabbing incident to AFP after the game but said the victim was believed to not have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Football: Kane included in England's Nations League squad despite injury

ENGLAND (REUTERS) - England captain Harry Kane has been included in Gareth Southgate's squad for June's Nations League finals despite an ankle injury, the Football Association said on Thursday.
Kane, who has not played since sustaining the injury in Tottenham's Champions League win over Manchester City on April 9, faces a race against time to be fit for the final of that competition against Liverpool on June 1.
England play their Nations League semi-final against the Netherlands on June 6, and Southgate is hopeful the striker will complete a full recovery over the next three weeks.
Kane is one of nine Champions League finalists named in the 27-man squad and Southgate is wary of fatigue concerns heading into the final stretch of the Nations League campaign.
"Post the Champions League final, we are going to have to assess everyone really," Southgate told a news conference.
"It is a strange situation for us but we have always adapted and we have always managed to achieve results with new players, with young players, so this looks like being the same.
"It is going to be a lot of uncertainty about who is going to be available until the last minute, but we have got a really strong squad with a lot of talent and we are looking forward to these matches."

Chelsea's Ruben Loftus-Cheek missed out on a place in the squad after his injury in a friendly in the United States on Wednesday, but fellow midfielders Declan Rice and James Ward-Prowse are involved again.
Southampton winger Nathan Redmond, overlooked since winning his solitary England cap in March 2017, returns to the squad after a strong finish to the domestic season which earned him the Player of the Year award at his club.
"It is a really good opportunity for Nathan," Southgate added.
"I think the new manager (Ralph Hasenhuettl) has had a positive effect: a lot of pace, playing the high press and he has started to score more regularly." Following the Netherlands clash in Guimaraes, England will face either hosts Portugal or Switzerland in a final or third-place playoff on June 9.
Full squad: Goalkeepers: Jack Butland, Tom Heaton, Jordan Pickford Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ben Chilwell, Joe Gomez, Michael Keane, Harry Maguire, Danny Rose, John Stones, Kieran Trippier, Kyle Walker Midfielders: Ross Barkley, Dele Alli, Fabian Delph, Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice, James Ward-Prowse, Harry Winks Forwards: Harry Kane, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Nathan Redmond, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling, Callum Wilson.

Belief can take United all the way: Solskjaer

Belief can take United all the way: Solskjaer

PARIS • This was the Manchester United of old, the United of Alex Ferguson, fighting till the final whistle and never giving up.
This was the United of their glory days, playing with steel, with youth, and winning in Fergie time.
Never before had a 2-0 home first-leg deficit been overturned in the Champions League, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men "always believed".
Against all odds, against all possession counts - Paris Saint-Germain had 82 per cent of the ball - United had dared to dream and, despite all their absences, had too much heart for the French champions on Wednesday night.
Romelu Lukaku twice capitalised on critical errors by PSG's backline before "fearless" Marcus Rashford converted his added-time penalty, his first for the club, as the Red Devils triumphed on away goals after a 3-1 victory in the second leg of their last-16 tie.
Afterwards, the Norwegian revealed he always felt the comeback was on the cards, before admitting it was "special", saying: "Football - that's what it gives you. We set out the plan and it wasn't about the ball.
"The plan was to get the first goal, be in the game with five or 10 minutes to go, and we were. The dressing room was unbelievable, just to see the club together with the owners, ex-managers, ex-players."
While United were fortunate at times, with Thomas Meunier and Juan Bernat - who got PSG's goal on the night - both striking the woodwork, the rash of injuries and Paul Pogba's suspension meant that Solskjaer's "fresh team" had "loads of energy" to soak up the pressure at the Parc des Princes.

  • 1st
Marcus Rashford's penalty was the first he has ever taken for Manchester United in a competitive match.

He added: "It's this club. It's what we do, that's Man United, that's the Champions League. It's a typical Manchester United night. We had a game plan and the belief in the boys was what we hoped for.
"Everyone shares a huge pride. The players were focused, they listened to all the instructions and they knew that we had to defend well. There was a lot of quality."
And, having made the quarter-finals for the first time since 2014, Solskjaer sees no reason why United cannot "go all the way" and claim their fourth European Cup after a record-extending nine consecutive away wins.
The caretaker manager said: "Of course we fancy ourselves, but we just have to wait for the draw (next Friday) and then take the game as it comes."
After Rashford's winner, which sparked scenes of delirium among the away fans, including Ferguson, Pogba and former United greats Patrice Evra and Eric Cantona, as well as on social media, United's players renewed calls for Solskjaer to be given the job full time.
Lukaku posed a question to reporters, asking, "What else does he have to do?", while Luke Shaw said: "I don't think I need to say much after all these results, it looks certain. We all love Ole and we love the job he's done so far... We've got so much more to look forward to."
Fellow full-back Ashley Young agreed, saying: "If you look from the outside, you'd say, 'Why not?'. He's been fantastic since he's come in, a breath of fresh air."
While United marched on, PSG were left to rue another Groundhog Day exit in Europe, with the club again failing to progress beyond the last eight since the Qatari takeover in 2011 despite the hundreds of millions spent in a bid to win their maiden European Cup.
However, club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was adamant there would be no knee-jerk reaction to fire manager Thomas Tuchel.
Insisting the club would "make decisions with a cool head", he told French daily L'Equipe: "I trust the coach... it's not because we lose a match that we have to act now... this is not the moment."
Neymar was in no mood to offer a measured perspective of the defeat. Lashing out at the video assistant referee system on Instagram after Rashford's spot kick, the Brazil forward, who was injured for both legs, called the decision a "disgrace".
In the other tie, Porto's 3-1 home win over Roma sent them through to the next round 4-3 on aggregate.
