Football: Bayern forward Sandro Wagner moves to China's Tianjin Teda after 'very attractive offer'

SHANGHAI (AFP) - Bayern Munich forward Sandro Wagner on Wednesday (Jan 30) joined Tianjin Teda in the Chinese Super League (CSL) for a reported transfer fee of €5 million (S$7.7 million) and a hefty pay packet.
A growing number of players are leaving Europe for China and typically earn much higher wages, although the Chinese football authorities have moved to cool the transfer market.
The 31-year-old former Germany international started just once for Bundesliga champions Bayern this season and failed to make the squad for their past two games.
"Sandro Wagner came to us and asked to be released from his contract," said Munich's sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.
"He had a very attractive offer from China and we met his request."
The Chinese and German media said Teda paid about €5 million for the forward, though German daily Bild said previously that Bayern wanted more than that.
Wagner has signed a two-year deal and will pocket about €7.5 million a season, Bild said, calling it "a mega salary".
The burly Wagner joined Bayern from Hoffenheim for €13 million last January to provide cover for Robert Lewandowski.
But he had become increasingly frustrated by his lack of playing time under Bayern head coach Niko Kovac.
Munich-born Wagner will link up with former Hertha Berlin team-mate Felix Bastians at Teda, who are coached by another German, Uli Stielike.
Teda have struggled in the CSL in recent years, and finished just outside the relegation zone last season.
Wagner's wife Denise and their three children will join him in China, Bild said.
Wagner retired from international duty with Germany in May last year - an angry reaction to being left out of the 2018 World Cup squad by Joachim Low, despite scoring five goals in eight games for his country in the previous 12 months.
The Chinese season begins on March 1.

Football: Tottenham announce first team's visit to Singapore and Shanghai in July

SINGAPORE - A Hurri-Kane is set to hit Singapore shores this summer as Tottenham Hotspur announced that their first team, headlined by England captain Harry Kane, will visit the Republic in July.
While the 25-year-old striker is currently nursing an ankle injury, he could return at the end of the month to boost English Premier League title hopes for Tottenham who are currently third behind Manchester City and Liverpool but within striking distance.
Other Spurs stars expected to feature prominently are France's World Cup-winning skipper and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, England midfielder Dele Alli and South Korean sensation Son Heung Min.
Tottenham said in a statement on Tuesday (Feb 19): "We are delighted to announce that the first team squad will travel to Singapore and Shanghai as part of our pre-season tour in July in preparation for the 2019/20 season.
"The tour will also enable us to join in the Centennial celebrations of our Global Principal Partner, AIA, whose roots trace back to Shanghai in 1919.
"Our tour to both Singapore and Shanghai will form an important part of the Pan-Asian life insurer's Centennial, with a 12-month programme of special events and activities across its 18 markets in the region having commenced in January.
"The visit also affords the club the opportunity to engage with our millions of fans across Asia including Official Supporters Clubs in both countries in which we will be playing fixtures."

The announcement virtually confirms Spurs will be one of the four teams competing in the International Champions Cup at the National Stadium in July.
Last week, The Straits Times reported that English Premier League clubs Manchester United and Tottenham are all but confirmed for the visit and negotiations are ongoing to add Italy's Juventus and Inter Milan to the line-up.
It is understood that the ICC is set to take place here over the July 19-21 weekend and will feature four teams - one more than in the last two years. But there will be just two games instead of the previous three.
Although the fixtures will be confirmed only on March 27, the new arrangement means the four teams do not need to take a break between matches and the weekend scheduling should attract more fans to the National Stadium.
While Spurs last visited Singapore in 1995, when they lost 4-2 to the Lions on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation, tours to Asia are not new to them. They were in Beijing for the 2009 Premier League Asia Trophy and Hong Kong for the 2013 edition. They also played in Malaysia in 2015, as well as Hong Kong in 2017.
Spurs fan Fabius Chen, a 33-year-old public servant, said: "I was there as a kid in 1995 and it was the first time I watched them in person. My favourite player at the time was Darren Anderton and I have never forgotten Singapore goalkeeper David Lee saving his spot-kick in the shootout.
"I'll be there again in July because as a fan from Singapore, chances to see the team live are few and far between.
"I hope manager Mauricio Pochettino and defender Toby Alderweireld will still be at the club then. I'm also looking forward to seeing a few new faces that can hopefully take the team further next season, a couple of future stars like striker Troy Parrott, and definitely a better result than the last time they were here."

A fourth participating team will be confirmed by next month. Returning to Singapore for 1st time since 1995. An official statement from the club said, "We are delighted to announce that the First Team squad will travel to Singapore and Shanghai as part of our pre-season tour in July in preparation for the 2019/20 season.

Football: Everton bounce back with 5-1 rout of Burnley

BURNLEY, England (REUTERS) - Everton ended their five-game winless run in emphatic fashion by drubbing relegation-threatened Burnley 5-1 at Turf Moor on Wednesday (Dec 26) as they bounced back from their humiliation against Tottenham Hotspur in real style.
Everton, thrashed 6-2 at home by Spurs on Sunday, were 3-0 up inside 22 minutes against a poor Burnley side who face a long battle against relegation.
French left-back Lucas Digne scored twice for the Merseysiders who showed no signs of any lasting damage from their heavy loss.
"After Sunday we needed to prove that we can win and play very well. It was an important win for club and the fans," said former Barcelona wing-back Digne.
"We needed to start very well and after 30 minutes we were 3-0 up and it was fantastic. We feel good".
It took less than two minutes to grab the lead when the unmarked Yerry Mina headed in a cross from the left by Brazilian winger Bernard.
A curling Digne free kick beat Burnley keeper Joe Hart to double the lead in the 13th minute and nine minutes later Everton were 3-0 up.
Burnley defender Ben Mee handled the ball, rising for a header in a crowded penalty area, and referee Michael Oliver awarded a spot-kick which Gylfi Sigurdsson confidently converted.
Sean Dyche's side pulled a goal back eight minutes before the break when a James Tarkowski header was pushed off the line by Jordan Pickford and Ben Gibson hooked the ball home.
Burnley had a great chance to narrow the gap further after the break but Tarkowski missed the target from close-range.
Burnley's labour towards an attempted comeback came to nothing after Digne made it 4-1 with a low drive from outside the box in the 71st minute.
Brazilian Richarlison, rested with a start on the bench, completed the rout in stoppage time, collecting a fine through pass from Sigurdsson before slipping the ball home.
Everton manager Marco Silva praised his players and the club's supporters for the way they reacted to the defeat to Spurs.
"The fans welcomed our players before the match, which is fantastic after a tough result on Sunday and the players as well, they deserve this," said the Portuguese manager.
"I think the best solution to the last result was to play as quickly as you can, luckily for us we played after three days.
"They showed they are here to fight, to compete and to show the ambition we have as a club" he said.
Burnley boss Dyche said his team had been clearly second best.
"They started much brighter, much sharper with more energy. They were the better side and deserved to win," he said.
The result leaves Burnley inside the relegation zone in 18th place - above only Huddersfield and Fulham.
"The margins are super fine; the challenge this season is we haven't kept the margins tight. There's a number of reasons why, but there's no excuse. We are where we are and we don't overly deserve to be better than where we are," said Dyche.

Football: Klopp charged by FA over referee comments in West Ham draw

LONDON (REUTERS) - Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was charged by the English Football Association (FA) on Wednesday (Feb 13) over comments he made about the referee after his side's 1-1 draw with West Ham United in the Premier League on Feb 4.
The German manager said referee Kevin Friend's performance was affected by the decision to allow Sadio Mane's opening goal, which should have been ruled out for offside.
The FA said Klopp had been charged as the comments "questioned the integrity of the referee and/or implied bias".
West Ham equalised through Michail Antonio's goal before the interval but Klopp said Friend "did not want to open the gap any more" in the second half.
"As a human being, if I know I have made a big mistake in the first half, I don't want to open the gap any more," Klopp said after the match at the London Stadium.
"Referees are obviously human beings, and I understand that, but I didn't during the game because I had no clue that our goal was offside."
Klopp has until 1800 GMT on Monday (2am on Tuesday, Singapore time) to respond to the charge.

Barcelona can end Real's title hopes
MADRID • After eliminating Real Madrid from the King's Cup in midweek, Barcelona now have the opportunity to send their arch-rivals packing in the title race, too.
The Spanish champions' 3-0 semi-final, second-leg win means they will go into their LaLiga Clasico clash with a spring in their step, even though Real were the better side in the second leg.
A repeat today at the Santiago Bernabeu would leave Santiago Solari's side 12 points adrift of Barcelona, who also enjoy a superior head-to-head record.
That would be a gargantuan gap to make up with 12 games left.
Atletico Madrid are closer, seven points back, and they still have to play Barca in April, albeit at the Nou Camp, where they have not won in 18 visits.
But there is no doubt bumping Real out of the chase would be a major step for the Catalan giants and they should feel confident if recent form between the two is any guide.

  • 12

  • Points behind leaders Barcelona if Real Madrid lose the Clasico with 12 LaLiga games left.

The Cup victory was Barcelona's fourth in six games at the Bernabeu and they have scored three or more in each of those matches. Defender Gerard Pique believes his team have Real worked out as they "know how to get at them".
Ernesto Valverde's men certainly taught Solari's players a lesson in finishing on Wednesday, with Luis Suarez notching his 11th goal in all Clasico encounters.
Tipping the Uruguay striker to again make the difference up front, Valverde told Spanish daily AS: "I don't think there are many players capable of scoring three times against Madrid twice in the same season.
"When Luis Suarez is in the area, he is at 200 per cent."
On Thursday, Valencia sealed a 1-0 second-leg victory over Real Betis to book their spot in the King's Cup final against Barca on May 25.
A 2-2 first-leg draw had given Marcelino's men the edge and they put in a solid performance to reach their first major final since winning the competition in 2008.
The Valencia coach said post-game: "We have suffered a lot this season and the team deserved this reward, we have had very difficult moments.
"We deserve better than the results show. There have been many draws, a few defeats. We are always competitive."

Football: Asian Cup holders Australia knocked out by hosts UAE

AL AIN, United Arab Emirates (REUTERS) - Defending champions Australia crashed out of the Asian Cup on Friday (Jan 25) when a contentious Ali Mabkhout goal earned hosts the United Arab Emirates a 1-0 victory and a semi-final meeting with Qatar next week.
Mabkhout struck midway through the second half after Milos Degenek under-hit a pass back to Mat Ryan, and the Al Jazira man swooped to round the goalkeeper and slot the ball into an empty net for his ninth goal in two Asian Cups.
The Australians complained Degenek had been fouled prior to giving away possession by Mohammed Abdulrahman, but Japanese referee Ryuji Sato waved away the protests and the goal stood.
Victory means Alberto Zaccheroni's side will move on to a potentially politically sensitive semi-final against their Arabian Gulf neighbours, who earlier stunned South Korea 1-0.
Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt launched a diplomatic and trade boycott of Qatar in June 2017. The countries accuse Qatar of supporting terrorism, which it denies.
The UAE's progress was vindication of Zaccheroni's decision to make five changes from the side that edged Kyrgyzstan in the previous round, with veteran striker Ismaeil Mattar making his first start of the tournament.
The home side who looked comfortable despite the changes and within a minute of kickoff almost took the lead. Ismail Al Hammadi flew through the Australian defence, but Ryan was equal to his goal-bound effort.
Al Hammadi threatened again 19 minutes later, with Ryan called into action again after the winger had stepped inside Australia's backline.
The Socceroos threatened, too, in an open and entertaining first half.
Trent Sainsbury looped an early header over the bar and Apostolos Giannou forced a save from Khalid Essa five minutes before the break.
Mabkhout, though, should have scored in the dying seconds of the half, only for his close range header to fizz over the crossbar.
He made amends after halftime when he capitalised on Degenek's poor pass to give his side the lead.
Australia coach Graham Arnold threw on strikers Awer Mabil and Andrew Nabbout in a last-ditch attempt to take the game into extra time. However, the UAE held firm to avenge their loss to the Socceroos in the semi-finals four years ago in Australia.
